To the top for a great thread and since I have 8's on the brain these days.

Rockman, did you have any success w/the 8 you had posted on this thread a yr ago??

I just saw his motor at Montys a couple days ago, not much done to it yet. My 3.6XP is alive again though, Monty did a good job getting it running again. Gotta put a tank of fuel through it before I can really play with it. I want to try my new to me Hoss Triton 31 before I have to go back to work next week. We'll see if the wife will let me put the hammer down on it.

Before Monty played with it, it was a dog out of the hole, now it just about rips your neck off. The only change he made to this stock motor was to swap intakes and reeds from the 5 petal design to a set of his worked 6 petal cages. It really woke the bottom end up.

I only have a few days left in America then back to work and back home. I will be having V8 withdrawals for weeks after I go.....................

    Edge, very cool.

Tunnelfun, two very rare motors. Especially if they're still running. Even more so if running good Evolution Marine was one of the premier OMC hot rod motor builders of the day.By most accounts Marvin pretty well had his **** together.
Stage IV was their mondo package.
    Lets see some pix's.

Just saw this posted over on the Checkmateboats.com website.

    http://toledo.craigslist.org/boa/4496677129.html

Talk about old school! This was put together at Kunkles Marine by Harold Kunkle. Harold was the man w/the V-8's and had them running good way before anyone else in the area. Check out the L/S dual plug heads, no air box and a 9 foot tall jack plate
Seller claims 90's and I believe it.
Harold was famous (still is) for taking a vee bottom O/B and spankin cats with it.
    He has a video (I've seen it) of him in a 21' or 22' Concord w/a V-8 walking away from a 24' Skater w/twin 2.4's
Remember too, this was the early/mid '80's when Merc only had a 2.4 and their bridgeport was their mack daddy.

In later yrs, Harold followed the market into I/O's and continued the tradition w/big block vee's spanking many local cats. His gig was to take a box ass stock 24, 25, 26, 27 Convincor and putting one of his shop motors in it. (He told me one was making 850 ft lbs of torque back before most understood the difference between ft.lb's and HP's, especially in heavy boats)
I know he had one running one teens 15 yrs ago.
He'd show up at the rallies and put up his umbrella shade in the cockpit and wait on the dust to settle. Then he'd fold up the umbrella and throw down.
Look up thew term,"walk softly and carry a big ass stick" and you'll see Harolds picture.
He did all the testing for the Checkmate factory and they used to include his testing reports in our dealer packages. I had one for yrs but can no longer find it.

Last time I was in his shop they had just picked up Eliminator and he had a 23' or 25' w/a mega big block in it. He was picking on it saying his current Convincor would eat it's lunch

We we rigged a new then 23 Daytona with stock 3.6 GTs from second effort. What a great sound when they sync'd. 99 Mph on the Norskog.... Boat was never really dialed in, it was awesome regardless.

    V Pads, protect those pages.
    I've haven't seen those in 20 yrs.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Marvins son and know he posts here.
    Maybe he'll add to it.

Twin stage IV V-8's..........., send me a pm if you want help on them.
Last one I thought I saw ended up being crap.

Wait there was a time before internet? I don't think I was around for it.

Ive seen an evo v8 block and they did a bunch of work to them. And it was very consistent and clean

They sat for 14 years and since buying the boat I have run them at low power for about 10 minutes with one full throttle run from 30 to 80. Yes they run good and yes I will need help.I would like to use them ,not blow them.Currently random flooding with 5 psi.New needles set 1/8 inch below gasket.Does it need 91 or 93 gas? What oil ratio? What is the actual hp and what is the power curve? Thanks.

Yes! Great success! Leaning 'er out and sticking a piston! I caught it just in time, let off the pedal and went to hit the primer and it bogged and came to a stop. Tried turning it over and nothin'. Waited about 3 or 4 minutes and it turned over. Towed it in and pulled the heads.
Well, shes back in the game, 2 new pistons (4 and 6), different heads, '98 carbs, 83's in the mains (theyre stayin'!), otherwise, everything else is pretty much the same.

Just spoke to Gordon today, my other one is being shipped on thursday, hopefully throw that one together before summers out. Not long enough here in Illinois!
Ill post some pics of the build here when I get going on it. Its the alodyne block in his shop some may have seen. That, by the way was the last of the new blocks (I believe). Both boats.net and marineengine.com now say "unavailable". To think I got that block for $600 NOS from Seaway...

    Been there, done that.

Once I get up north and settled, w/a shop, we may have to compare notes. Trying to pull off adding a V-8 to the moving van going to Cinci w/o anyone noticing ; )
Had one lined up but after putting the new Checkmate on a charge card I couldn't get mama to sign off on it
Didn't Toby Keith sing, "I'm not as good as I once was"? : )
