Fred, you need to ask...
around and see how available this stuff really is before you get all geeked out over it.
Then price it.
This thread is about "FISH" motors because:
A. they're dirt cheap
B. you can make almost as much power with one (again, ask around) as an F-1 style motor.
C. there are parts everywhere
Picture #1. is a buddy of mines motor. Call Greg at Seaway and price a set of heads or blocjk for that motor then get back to us.
Picture #2. is the Offshore motor you're talking about. It made 390 HP's (a detuned F-1 motor) but were even fewer of those built than the F-1 motors from what I've heard.
Call Greg and get prices for ANYTHING on that motor (especially the shiftable gear case) and then get back to us.
OK, can we get this freagin thread back where it was 2 days ago

Since most folks here are using their motors for performance applications bigger is not always better. I have owned two V-8’s 85 3.6 275 & 88 4.0 300 but I used them on big heavy deep V offshore rigs. On top end my V-8 (stock) was almost equal to a big V-6 (stock) of the same power but when under loads or acceleration the V-8 wins hands down. Kind of like comparing the pulling power of a Ford F-150 (6) to a Ford F-250 (8.) They both will reach 60 at the same time but put a trailer behind it and see who comes out on top. Seems like nothing has the torque of a v-8 unless it's another V-8.

Things I would like to know
Questions about the V8.
How to tell the various intakes by sight or part #
How to tell the different types of carbs by sight or part #
Which intake and carbs were deemed best for “fishin type use?”
Types of minor mods (stuff a shade tree can do) that will improve performance. Modifications are made during a rebuild. (Performance defined as more HP vs amount of fuel burned.)
Lots of opinions about the 2 block sizes. I’ve read here the 3.6 is preferred as a race build, and the opposite for the fishing. The 87 I had was a 4.0 having parts from both.

actually Naiscoot theres atleast 3 of us on here running our 8s on large Scarab center consoles and find this a very interesting and informative read!! and the other thing is not too many motors will run that type of power pushing a heavy load for very long!!
I run 8000 lbs all day long in the ocean, whether I am going 60 miles out chasing Tuna, inshore fishing, firing up the grill and icing up the blender, getting the girls dancing and swinging from the T-Top I always trust it to get me home, it's never left me stranded and it's got pretty good power!!! but I don't want 400HP out of it because of my intended useLast edited by markt111; 12-26-2007 at 07:18 AM.

The 2 on ebay were a steal had I not been moving I would have made known to all what a deal they were. The smoked one was an easy fix and there was a great deal of extra parts. Buddy of mine passed on them and they went to ebay or they might have been sitting in my shop. Rick

And Mark, I just can't wait for Keiths engines to be mounted back up and tested. OK, 400HP is a little too much for the tech and the $$$ most of us have, but Monty has convinced Keith that 370HP is fully doable on a fishing motor with fairly good fuel economy, so that is what they are going for.... Now, that being said, I think I will set up another account and wait for it to grow to $10.000,- in order to take care of my 3 engines. Theoretically, that should bring my boat close to Reggies record of 87MPH..... Yeah, I love those old V8's as well...., and like you I will never give up the ability to have chicks dance to a 1000W stereo, fire up the grill, have plenty of livewells, and still be able to have power enough to get the job done (i.e. wopping a bass boat every now and then...
)
