Thread: V-8 History??

Not to mention the cool factor and the fact that you are actually running a V8 and not a V6 (like what is found in most soccermom vans and such). Fuel is also far easier to cost share with friends on long trips...
Instigator, have you found anything else?
I have three of those V8's mounted on my boat and despite the fact that they are all 4.0's, they are different in everything else. My LH is the only 4.0 I know of that the motor actually turns CC. My mid is 1993 with a LH gear case, my RH is a modified 1987 - 4.0 block and the rest being stock. Racer was very helpful in identifying what I had back there and I am reading this thread with keen interest. Please keep up the good work as I am continuing to work on mine, and like to find out what is what. I have two 25" mids that I like to change to 20" mids if you should happend to run across anything.True Viking

OK, so which one of those is YOURS? We'll be out at the sandbar tomorrow with our fishing motors, actually running them for distances beyond a 1/4 mile. That's my definition of a fishing motor...reliability and use. Come look us up. We'll have the V8's on the back...pick a boat.

v-8 lower
what are the issues with the stock v-8 lower unit, and more important some of the solutions. I know the stock v-8 lower is huge and causes alot of drag does the v=6 fit and will it stand up?

Lighten up guys...
6 and Stratos are only showing what is possible w/a 6 and yes they are drag motors and no they won't work for what most on this thread are talking about but does PROVE what is possible.
Kim. both the early 6's and 8's spun bachwards to make LH motors.
I have parts break downs for 86,87 and 88 V-8's and am comparing #'s to try and decipher what is what.
I would like to know the port heights on the different eras too though.
Racer eluded to a lot of it if you read closely.
I came within a nats eye lash of doing an 8 for this project but was talked out of it and probably the right thing to do for now.
My plan though is once I figure out what my 6 wants in the way of gearing, fuel curve, compression etc, then I'll build an 8.
I am after the ultimate OMC "Lake Motor", and my 6 should be close but an 8 is just something special for us die hards.
Motors and parts are so cheap down here that I can't stop myself
I have one supplier w/a a stack of 8 heads that I need to go through and see what they are.
I am collecting parts now but need to know which block, heads, reeds etc.
I think an 8 on a cut down GT mid w/the factory snout would be badd asss!!Last edited by Instigator; 12-23-2007 at 07:53 AM.

They don't like surfacing. If you are going to surface one, especially on a bigger boat, swap to a CLE or Sportmaster.
Just send the thing to Monty and be done. He's already done all the playing to figure out what works and he's right in your back yard.Keith-

Stratos, Keith and Fred....
Stratos, you really didn't need to do that. No worries here.
Keith, as Gordon knows, I like the challenge of doing it myself. All I'm trying to determine at this point is which parts to start with. It will be a while to as I'm not even done with my 6 yet.
Fred, so your saying the powerhead in that picture is still available and uses all stock parts?
