...with the stock second effort johnrude 3.6 gt's or whatever you called them things, back then, everything new, about 84/85. those s.e. 3.6's were stock powerhead, 20'' engines, that were rigged on some new 22's. i remember mercury choppers went on all the mercury o/b boats, but can't recall what went on the johnrudes as far as props went, but they must have been rakers, cause a merc prop didnt have anything back then to put them on an omc. memory gone on that. i do remember a fair share of "aftermarket'' stainless chopper style props going on boats, from "s & s propeller" who were up in the northeast somewhere. they performed really well on the 22's & were the hot ticket that steve liked selling customers back then, cause they were good for 3-5 mph. all i/o mercruiser 22's simply got mirages, no matter the engine size package, whether it was a regular thru-transom exhaust 260, 350 magnum, 320efi, 454 magnum alpha or alpha ss...

Yeah, I know the SE 8’s we’re stickers and smoke and mirrors.
I tried a bunch of SRXs and never got them to run.
Ive heard they’re badd asss after being worked.
I have a set of stock 27’s for my Convincor and will send them out if they show me anything.
Rakers were/are some of if not THE (IMO) best through hubs ever.
I ran Choppers and Rakers on both my 24’ Sonics.
The Choppers slipped a bit rolling over on plane but were 2 mph faster than the Rakers which slipped zero.
I raced a 22’ Velocity OB to a dead heat w/my first Sonic when it was running 76/77 but don’t remember what he had for power.
Thinking an early 300x.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

The literature (which I have somewhere) on my 1990 Regal Velocity read 1,900 lbs, so they definitely grew 500 pounds from the 1,400 lb boats. 4” Land and Sea and a 26 Trophy would touch 70 with the stock 250 efi. When I sold it in 2012 to a guy in NY, it still looked amazing. Transom was still strong with no spider cracks. He was mainly going to run it on Lake George.
Quick funny story, I made up my S&F name just before I bought the Velocity in 2004. I had been looking for a decent one for a while. I estimated that I would get 72 out of it with the new 250 I was going to rig, so hence the Velocity72 name. I missed it by 2 mph. I knew I could tweak the setup and get the 2 mph, but it was such a nice stock rig - skiing, cruising, etc. - that I left it alone. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. Loved the colors. A little dated, but so am I…

We used choppers on GT3.6 V8's late 80s early 90's. Motor was on a J-Craft intimidator and best we got was 92mph.

...yes, pro-peller modified srx props were used by velocity back in the earliest days of velocity as well. forgot about them. agree, as an out of the box propeller they were not much to brag about back then, too thick...too heavy, etc..., but really became a good performance propeller when worked over by a good prop man. they worked best on the smaller, lighter rigs of the day...
