Back home to our place at Lake of the Ozarks. Heading down to Friday Hot Summer Nights at the strip. Lots of old boat racing friends here.
Can really recommend this powerboat lake.

Put on a Safe Show for all.

The unfortunate thing it takes tragedy to inspire safety innovation. Kill switch and safety capsule come to my mind. And then future race events are then put in jeopardy of being cancelled or liability insurance is extremely high (and maybe cost prohibitive).

The annual Long Beach Sprint Nationals in 2019 was postponed by a couple of weeks, because of insurance. The city of Long Beach California demanded higher coverage, than the previous years. Later on short notice the race transpired, and the race fleet entrants was smaller in numbers compared to previous years.

I have several times assisted at the LBSN event. And the local fire department is monitoring the safety regulations throughout the race days' events. And the heat races cannot proceed if one person has a foot in the water. Among other restrictions and safety measures.

21st century racing is more regulated (including safety for drivers and spectators) then in the older days of the 20th century.

A spectator fatality can spell Doom, for a race event. It took 28 years before Irvine Lake hosted another boat race, after a boat came onshore and killed a nine year old girl in 1985. Prior races at Irvine had race drivers fatalities too. And thus the ban, on Irvine Lake in California hosting race boat events.

But sometimes the annual events can be resurrected, and be promoted again, by meeting certain safety requirements. See the news clip below and link.

Lucas Series Director Ken Dollar said the series was able to convince Irvine Co. board members and local authorities that “today it’s not the same as it was back in 1985, and they gave us a chance to come back and prove it.”

“Safety’s the biggest thing,” Dollar added. “Back in 1985, it was just a bunch of cowboys out racing their fast boats. But if we were gonna become a true mainstream motorsport, we had to start addressing a lot of the safety issues, not only competitor but spectator.”

makes you wonder how those guys in key west race in shorts and tee shirts and go past the dock at a speed that says they will be on the dock if anything goes wrong. Not to mention the videos of the shear panic in the cockpit when one goes over, what kind of dunk training is that?
