Does anyone know why the West Coast guys preferred their stacks flared-up 45 degrees into the wind?

The standard stacks parallel to the water's surface, seems to be more streamlined & aerodynamic.

I always figured the reason they were angled on that boat was being a twin engine hydro with only about 4 inch mids
the lower pipe would be under water on take off.
I can tell you those pipes are about half the weight with all the ribs and springs removed.
When i ran them hard the megaphones would hit each other and dent the one next to it.
But they never cracked at the flange welds.
Mark needs to get going and built that boat.
