Does this count? 97.6 mph in a full-weight stock-bottom 1990 eliminator using a 28" max5. I'm pretty sure there's more in it with setup time and an actual driver.

Having all those options to run with, does the 400R compare well?
I also think pulling that bracket would free up some mph as well.

I got the boat after the triples were removed, so I only experienced the twin 300's. Obviously, 600 hp is going to accelerate better than 400. However, I ran faster with the single 400. My boat lost something like 600 lb, not to mention the reduction in drag by having one less gearcase in the water. I believe toffen experienced the same thing because his single 400r ran the same speed as his twin 280's. There's a long list of other benefits as well, such as fuel economy (>4 mpg at 60 mph vs <2), reduced maintenance, easy starting and smooth quiet idle, single configurable display with gauges and maps, drive by wire, power steering, an overall cleaner installation, etc. I have no regrets, except it sure looked cool with a pair of 300's hanging off the back.
as for the bracket, I'm not thrilled about it either. But the bolt pattern isn't standard so to really fix it right is going to require filling 24 bolt holes in the transom.Last edited by engineermike; 04-03-2018 at 10:23 AM.
