That's true... (and Arizona and Nevada). COR stands for Classic Outboard Runabout. It is a series started on the west coast to revive ModVP racing. Now the group has renamed the calls Classic Mod VP. This thread is discussing the fact that the group outlawed v-bottoms and pickle forks. They also require a length longer than the original 17' 9" rule in ModVP to I think 18' 6". Only pointy nose mod vps are allowed (sleek, baker, stoker, hst, etc).

Intent of the rules would be easily understood if they had just said no boats made east of the Rockies.

The only way to get REAL Mod VP racing going again is if APBA does it , Now THAT would be C O O L
Al Stoker it's your move

With out safety cells , just like the early 80's. NASCAR on water, ( back when NASCAR used real factory steel, loved the old rules),
Mod VP, always thought it was the best class because everyone could relate to normal boats on local water ways.
Think about it, that class was the reason we have iconic boats like the Baker/Stoker/STV/Mirage/Sleekcraft SST, good old memories ...Last edited by CUDA; 03-05-2018 at 12:07 AM.

Bobby, is a sanctioning body required to put on a race? If it is, can you be your own sanctioning body for purposes of building classes and putting on the event? Seems like if anyone would know how to put together a set of good rules it would be you! If you ever decide to put together a race, give me a shout I'd be there to help you in any way possible.

I don't remember the year because I was out of it by then but they were forced to install safety cells , sometime around 1990 I believe.

CUDA, COR is APBA sanctioned however the class is allowed to make up their own rules. Like no V-bottoms. GEEZE!! I still can`t get over that!
Matt, I don`t need any sanctioning body to put on a race. Only reason would be to take advantage of an existing class hopefully with many boats. Couple that with a good purse and you stand a good chance of getting a large entry list. At one time I was leaning heavy towards doing this at Lake Buhlow with a few partners and considered COR to be the best choice because at that time they had a good thing going with many participants.
powerabout, There are many opinions as to why MOD-VP ended. Mine is because the class got pulled from the national circuit (IOGP) and when that happens the club racers have no more dreams to move up to the big league. Now the real question is why was it pulled?
MOD-VP had safety cells soon enough so that ain`t it. I think Racer was the first. I was skeptical about being strapped in but did it anyway. After I rolled one in St Louis during practice I understood.

Fun what do you know about outboard drag racing , I can send you last years rules . ???
Well, let's see,,, what do I know,,, hmm, well my Dad brought home 1 if not 2 "Unlimited Outboard National Champion" trophy's from "NDBA" National Championships in High Point NC where he lost his life in 1984 at Oak Hollow. at that time I think there were 2 classes, stock and unlimited. none of this "lake-mod-pro-super stock-jack racer" crap. how many National Championships trophy's have you brought home with that freak hull you overthought with as many steps that you could possably cram into a running surface? my point is if people can't win through raw talent they have to revert to changing legislation to eliminate competition. just like liberals in government. so I guess I don't know about the kind of drag racing you played around in. fun outmost overnite successes usually take at least 10 years
I`m not sure what you mean by this but I did race MOD-VP back in the day and would love to see it make a comeback just not under COR rules.
I can appreciate your interests, my point is drag racing went from basically 2 classes, stock and modified, to "everybody gets a participation trophy" fun outmost overnite successes usually take at least 10 years

A lot of good points are being made here. I raced mod VP in the mid-80s had a short but fairly successful career, we broke the world closed course record and earned US2 that year. LTV Comp with a ModVP Bridgeport. I respectfully disagree with the IOGP analogy. When we raced back in the mid-to-late 70s the only National events such as that were the actual Nationals. You could go boat racing just about every weekend if you were willing to drive maybe a couple of hours to do it. You didn't get much of a trophy and but it didn't cost you a whole lot to race either. It was a true hobby class sport. I was promoting races during the mid to late 80s here in our hometown and a number of the regional level Racers were complaining about not getting the prize money such as IOGP. It was like all of a sudden the short track guys all wanted to race Daytona for the big sponsors and prizes. I think the capsules had something to do with the demise of the class, but they can't be held totally accountable. The NASCAR analogy is good. I always felt like a well-run program with Mod VP, SST 140 and Champ classes is like going to the races and watching Winston Cup, sprint cars, and Indy cars all in the same afternoon. I don't think we'll ever see it again, however it would be good.
