One motor builder did build a OMC twin with expansion chamber and it did very well in the few races he took it to.

I agree, I do not think a modified 44 Merc has the potential to make 70hp.
The mid is taller but did the rules restrict the use of the standard tower? Yes I know about Anthony's project & Farmer's boat. I just wasn't convinced that picking up the exhaust in the open exhaust housing was doing much tuning.
and btw we struggled with the mid range with the 45 but were able to overcome that issue by fattening up the mid range jets and going a bit leaner on the high speed jets

Phil Rolla loaned the prop to Mike Downard to evaluate it at altitude-------Mercury were light years behind in prop technology at that time.

[QUOTE=Mark75H;2973630]Started collecting parts to make something like this for one of my racing lower units that was sucking in water ... changed to a super synthetic lube that ran so much cooler that I never had to complete the project.

Back in the 80's I did a patent disclosure on this for Mercury - even had test parts running on some local fish boats at the Placida test center. Never got a patent, then Merc racing came out with their version. Wonder where they got the idea from!
