Rebuilt Powerhead vendors - Opinions?
Last season my outboard bit the big one.
Not really sure exactly what happened. It was the first outing of the season and after idling out of the no wake zone, it just bogged down and died after about 30 seconds of 3/4 throttle running. Got it started again, but it was missing bad.
Its not seized, but had no compression on #6.
I didn't pull the head, but putting air in the cylinder, I could hear it blowing out the exhaust regardless of the piston position.
After paying my local shop $150 to tell me what I already knew, I just had it wrapped and winterized because I knew that I would not be able to afford to do anything to salvage the season because my Daughter was getting married in October.
I've been doing some poking around on the interwebs, and I'm not finding much in the way of used motors in the horsepower I need, 225HP.
I don't mind a 2 stroke, in fact I'd be more partial to a 2S over a 4S, but I don't want anything older than my current motor, which is a 1996 Mariner 225 Offshore carb motor.
I'm finding lots of 90-115-150's but not much in the 200-225 range.
My boat, 26 Leisurecat, came with either a 200 or 225 originally.
I don't really want to step down to a 200, so 225 is my only option.
Repowering with new is not an option, the budget won't support that.
I have found Crowley Marine and Boatpartstore.com having similar prices on reman powerheads, but not much info here on the forums about how good they are.
I'm leaning towards replacing the powerhead because it's looking less expensive than a used motor with unknown issues or history.
Opinions or info?
Thanks.

I think it would be crazy not to figure out what's wrong with the one you have; and how much it will cost to fix, first.
It would only take a few minutes to pull the heads off and take some pictures to post here and get a ballpark number for repairs.
Probably / possibly all the "expensive" parts of your motor are still good.

n3up,
you're not that far from me. I can pickup your powerhead and bring to Fuller's Marine and let them diagnose and fix your motor. when completed, I can bring back to you.

I'm planning to dig into it as soon as the weather breaks enough to be able to work outside comfortably.
Even if I get a reman powerhead, I still will need to pull it first to verify exactly what I have.
There is no serial number found on it, so I think it's had a powerhead replaced once already.
I'm pretty sure it's a 96 model year based on other parts on it.
I think there was a change in driveshaft splines around the 96 MY, so I'll need to verify that.

Don't go remanned. I made that mistake a few years back due to lack of time. Debris was left in on the rebuild and marred up the top of one piston and damaged the head. They told me I could send it back and they would assess it. Was quicker to just do it myself. Take up noli on his offer and send it to fullers. Haven't heard a bad thing about those guys.

do not delay , till spring like every one else . Do it now , spring will be full of get me in the water , new boat and motor rigging and deliveries . Most dealers around here will try to sell you a new motor that time of year ....... They make more $$$$ doing the small fixes and new sales and tell you to come back after the mad rush is over , mid June perhaps ...Just my two cents

In That You're in Pennsylvanian give Fullers Marine and Machine a call. They are in Bayville New Jersey 732-736-0444. I know George had some Brand new 225 Pro Max bare Blocks. Or I have no doubt he can work something out with you on a rebuild or what ever. Hes also a supporting vendor on here. Great Guy!! Great People all around and Great Friends.
