Well my neighbors cringe every time they see a new project coming in. I try not to be a nuisance and respect the environment but it is very difficult to get small jobs done with any quality at a decent price. That applies to gelcoat, paint, carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, mechanical.....and on and on. I can't pay for two people, 8 hours to do 2 hours worth of work and still not be done properly.

I bought an Axis HobbyAir supplied air setup with a full hood about 15 years ago and never regretted it. Last I saw they were around $550 which is cheap compared to what isocyanates do to your body. Couple that with a paint suit and gloves. I don't paint a lot but it just seems dumb to do without good safety equipment.

Agreed !! ^^^^

I have this unit, with a 75' hose. It works well for me. Use it while sanding/grinding on fiberglass and when painting the nasty stuff we use today. Wish I hada bought one years ago..

Heck..I'll probably spend more on bee....,er I mean sodas than what this unit costs for this project alone ....
Think I paid right at $400 shipped to my door.

Air pump in cooler with ice and the air coming out in the helmet is nice and cool......Only way to go in the summer. Went air supplied respirator 20 yrs ago, still have the thing and use it religiously.....

If you have a fancy gun you are in love with it can still be used in conjunction with a small pressure pot buts fits the bottom of the gun and have a 1.5 liter of paint or what ever instead of the 2 or 3 cups full there must be a lot of old secondhand pots laying about people don't know what to do with so can be recycled and put to good use . They have the advantage of if you are reaching way over the top of what ever it is you painting your arms done get tired and they don't drip out from where the pot is clipped onto the gun when its tipped on a angle . I always use plastic containers inside as drop in's so is quick and easy to clean and saves a lot on thinners for cleaning , only having to clean the inside of the tube and the internals of the gun head to flush
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere !
BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!
so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

OK guys, your words are sage advice. If I gelcoat an entire boat i will invest in a fresh air supplied hood.

This stuff has killed many people that thought they could hold their breath. Or believed they had enough ventilation to keep them from getting over exposed. I quit doing boats and cars glass/paint for a living many yrs ago and probably prolonged my life. It has a residual effect in the body's organs and it gets you slowly but surely.....Do not underestimate it...

Yes I totally agree !! its ok wearing safety gear but how well do you look after it??The number of respirators I've seen that have never had there filters changed is staggering .
I always wrote the date on each filter when its was changed and washed the mask out a couple of times a week with soapy then fresh water ! I still have it sealed in a plastic bag and two sets of filters and dust filters with them ! One company I went to I stopped everyone working till everyone in the workshop got or had there old respirators replaces with brand new , AND had Names and Dates written on them !!.
Safety was and still is my number one on the top of my hot list when ever im in a glass shop working or visiting , there are no if and buts and if the foreman or leading hands get pissed then that there problem ,They are supposed to look after there staff even if the workers cant or wont look after them selves .Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere !
