    Spray gun

Had a bad uh-oh on my fiberglas hood for the old Dodge hot rod. Just getting around to fixing it. I have always sprayed with an old Binks suction type gun. Served me well but seems these higher viscosity, high build primers just don't like it. I can't get a decent fan that is wet enough to lay down. I don't paint much but very picky when I do. Suggestions on a HVLP gun? Don't want to spend a fortune. Shooting catalyzed high build primer and one stage acrylic enamel with hardener.

I have a Sata RP 2nd Gen that sprays close to the old guns but it's a crime to spray primer thru it. Maybe find one used for cheap since they are on the 5th Gen now I think. Make sure the needle and tip are good since they are a matched pair and last set I bought was 4 years ago for close to $200.00.

I ordered the Harbor Freight LP gun for spraying gel and metal flake.....They make one that comes with a larger tip for flake and what not.

Will they be OK on the top coat of acrylic enamel? Ilike something that really lays down a heavy fan as everything I do gets blocked out and wet sanded.

I'm ordering one of the ones you used outasite, your gell came out of the gun better than I have ever gotten it in over 25 yrs! Harbor frt guns have a silicone grease in them from ching chong mfg co. You have to clean them well before using, or.......feeshie's

Ordered two Outasite. One for primer and one for finish. Getting ready to completely re-gelcoat the old Jaco record boat and I think this gun will do the job. Getting rid of all the Allison textured crap and going for nothing but slicked out, buffed surface. Solid white with a new Drag aluminum transom. 630 pound XB2002 bass boat. Big Tis eat your heart out!!!!!

I have one of these also. Love that gun to death. You cant beat it for spraying base coat, single stage and clearcoats. Primer, nope.

Have a fire damage boat we had to fair over 15' of the hull. As a indicator for blocking i wanted to spray some spray fairing over our bodywork. I needed a 2.5 so i ordered that exact ebay one with the green painted parts.
first i had to take a goddamn hammer to the tip to get it apart, it has a plastic oring that i cant see surviving a couple cleanings. Its covered in oil so you have to really take it apart and clean it out real good. Having owned many spray guns over the years i said "well if i sprays this primer thats all i need it to do"
the grease in the gun was disgusting, all the green paint started flaking off the thing, its a piece of crap. The only thing good is the size of the cup, its huge. The lid is junk, But the cup is huge ( which by the way didnt fit any other gun i own )

i load it up with primer, and it sprays like garbage. Like really sprays like garbage.
dump it out and into my trusty cheap astro gun with a 2.0 tip and away i go, i spray a gallon of it in no time at all.

moral of the story- im sticking with astro guns for primers and gelcoat (i also havea 1.4 astro and a pressure gun ) and my devilbiss guns for topcoat. I suggest you check into astro guns for a affordable decent gun that will last. I have been burned now by 3 el cheapo guns no more crap ebay junk for me i had realistic expectations for the cheap gun but it was a huge let down and ended up in the trash can, didnt even bother to clean it and put it in my cabinet

For the last 30 years I have always used a pressure pot spray system and it is able to spray almost any thing ! Gel coats , paints , enamels, two pot paints , hi build spray primers even with a percentage of Q cells of micro balloons added that makes it even thicker for really high build and good build up on wavy surfaces . Why anyone would even attempt to use just a ordinary spray gun is beyond me . The system I have has been added to with a extra regulator and pressure gauge Plus has all quick release couplers to adapt a 1.5 liter pot for small jobs or have a 6.5 liter pot for gel coating up to 40 foot hulls and decks . All using the same gun just long or short hoses with big or small pots and everything adjustable product supply to the gun, the spray width . the fan , the air to reduce the amount of over spray . And ordinary gun has trouble coping with less that a 1/4 of what any pressure pot can do even spraying upside and any other angle all in one pass and never miss a patch any where ! so why have all those different sorts of guns when just one well thought out system does everything ?? including spider webbing, and speckle coating . fine finish coats for boats and cars , or acrylic for the interior finish at home !! so why bother?.
All the boat companies I worked I've made one of my pressure pot systems for them !. One company in South Korea made two identical systems for there two different factories !, so on big jobs the 2 systems were used at the same time with just one person doing the Catalyst mixing for both guns !
Its limitless what you can do with a well set up fully adjustable pressure pot system !!!

Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!
