its a Stroker, built it for my dad. Went 102 at 6400 first time out before we ran out of room. This was with 2 aboard and a full fishing load...including a big ipilot Minnkota, a Talon and a Humminbird 360 (essentially 2 talons). Had 20psi of WP and a bad cross wind. When the time is right there will be a big number. A stock 300xs would be lucky to have seen 95 with the same load and couldn't have even done it in a short run like we had. Boat would have been much faster if the conditions were better.

No doubt the 400s faster just not an ideal engine for some boats. If the 3.0 sporty would survive it might help but even bushs Merc 3.4 was pushing the pinion out the side at 400+hp with big props.
That large lower unit was doing funky things , life is short enough...

Cuz this picture is the target Mercury is aiming at ....>
Those with a different agenda will always find a way to extract the full potential and see even a brand new one in the box as a core ...
Not a lot of difference between a 1.75 and a 1.62 Looking a little farther down the road , adding one more tooth on the pinion makes it a 1.48 / 1 The factory gears are made out of glass . It's time to cut some out of a more malleable material ....

A 32 Doug Wright with 700s will run in the high 130s and a skater isn't that much slower.

Its a big inve$tment to upgrade to 400s and still get whooped by something that cost about the same. I bought a new 30 ft. cat with triple outboards (260s at the time) which was considerably less expensive then buying an inboard version that would perform the same so it made sense. If you were building a new one today with 400s, your budget offers better options for all out performance IMO.

Totally agree, I'm an outboard guy to the end but if you have the budget for these things that probably are on the edge of the hp available why.... like joe said, put some io power in the thing and you have got something to work with if you need more. For the 20 something cats may be the only way to go if you have to have a merc since the optis are on the way out. Gary, i agree too,not buyin it. I should add......I'm NOT sayin its a bad motor i love what merc does, they are huge innovators in the industry and its right here in the USA just dont think the 400r is the greatest thing since ... well you know.

We are in the process of building a 22t liberator with a 400RS on it. Should be very interesting.

    .

very nice, this is great news!

please share pics of the build process. Would love to see pics of the factory laying up the 22t

does the "t" in 22t mean "taller" deck ?
