I run
a 3.3 and love it! Had a few issues concerning water in the filter and restriction of water to the computer via fuel pump needed cleaning - I noticed it is best to run high quality synthetic oil or she will foul plugs - heres mine

Thought it looked familiar. Thats where i got the idea from for mine. I love it with the real trim system. Im dying to weigh mine cause the v8 mid and machined adapter I used in place of the stock e-tec mid/adapter should be less than half the weight. Even with the ~15lbs of pump in the boat its still a big weight savings.

i am
an engine builder - like to grind on em some - keeps me going - most of my work is on stock fishing engines - like I said - I like them all - I will say I do have a new found respect for the second generation yamaha four strokes since completing all the courses down there in kennesaw. Two strokes are the deal - especially the ones that have big ole pistons in em - I like to be able to put my hand in there!

After reading through this whole thread. I have come to the conclusion there is really only a handful of people who can make an Etec make the h.p. that has been made. You know who you are and you deserve a pat on the back. Taking the newest technology and making it better, faster and more reliable as far as drag motors go.........
Looking forward to the newest versions of Etec to hit the water. Just out of curiosity I went a grabbed old faithful and did a compression test. 35 hp Johnson my father bought over 30 years ago, compression down 3 pounds on the lower cylinder. Duck hunters motor with hi perf life. If this motor lasts this long, the Etecs will make it longer.........

I'm thinking yes now that the right people are playing with the bigger Merc's. Your talking about 380 HP out of a 2.5 liter motor. What's the most anybody made out of a 2.6 omc? I'm just comparing apples to apples. I'm not brand loyal to any of them. Iv built a 3.6 liter Mercury on a 12 inch mid that I will be racing next year in the DSRA. It's just like the one that Galen built Harry Billiot that was the first all motor boat to out run Mathew Caledwell in the 1/8th mile. And he did it with a fiberglass boat. I don't have any dyno numbers on it but I know it turns between 9500 and 10000, with 1.75 gears and a 22 in the 1/8th. Now you want to talk about 480 HP on pump gas you are 100% correct but the only thing on that motor that came from the factory that way is I guess you can say the crank and rods but those are modified also. Aftermarket ignition, stand aloan fuel management, aftermarket front case half. And the best turner in the country working on it. I'm not trying to take anything away from it because it is incredible what that motor will do. But comparing that motor to a 2.5 liter mercury is like comparing a SVT Cobra to true 10.5 outlaw drag car. Yea the factory cobra is bad. But it doesn't hold a candle to the world of aftermarket one off parts.
who knew a lil ol fishin motor could run like that

Dont make it an OMC thing
Mathews is not a 2.5 its a 2.7 or 2.9 stroker and he (and the other guy runnin one) went through 2 or 3 powerhead in one race last year. At those power levels the 2.5 dont seem reliable and his motors are far from stock drag so it doesnt even fit in this conversation. He does the same thing the 3.0 boys are doing, taking a motor changing EVERYTHING to make it run better. Thats admirable.
