Jackie, upon reading this, I clicked back to the main page and realized that I hit the magic 200K... while no lights or buzzers went off around me, I thought it was nevertheless pretty cool. Great
name, outstanding content .. I'll join you in congratulating Willibee and those who participated along the way. Next number to hit...?

This looks like St Louis in '74 ??--I believe the '73 race was a 1 hour marthon. Also won by Slack secound was John Sherlock.. this is the day of the Rent-A-Wrench....Where in the factory could blueprint your eng but you could not do the same. Most of the engines right behind Slack were Rent-A-Wrench engines.......Oh!! aand the engine inspectors where from Mercury Rent-A-Wrench....Jim was one hell of a jockey and really knew how to get the Cougar around the course...

Chad Lee says it is 1976. Because his Dad (David) won. Sounds right to me.

#173 is Doug Pearl in a Scorpion Hull. Some people had said it was fiberglass but in this photo it sure looks like wood to me.

I thought 173 might be a McCall, but up close it sure has the Scorpion logo. I think there are pictures of it or another one like it here on Screamandfly. I think the red and white 500 something might be an E & T

The bank looks different and there were more boats in '73 & 4. Jim and I had moved on by the end of '74'. I did not follow racing out of the area after '74.
I don't know how many boats started in those years but they lined up from close to the boat ramp past the bend by many boats. Jim slack and Jim hunt both impressed me with their ability driving the one pin turn course. Jim's dad (Jim Sr.)and greatest supporter set up a course at a lake near their home that was as close the the St Louis course as possible. With a hand full of props (thank you Louie Baumann) the two worked on getting around the course as quickly as possible. The start was also a invention of the Slack Racing team. That way of starting put Jim at the turn bouy first and gave him the clean water- worth a couple of MPH. I was standing on the hill watching the race when Sherlock passed Jim in the first of the one hour--it didn't take long before I had a couple of mercury engineers ease up next me to point that out. Three laps later Jim was back in front and stayed there till the finish.....The engineers left for some reason.....
thanks for helping me with the year... I do not always get the years right....Nor do I want to take any thing away from anyone....i never met David but I did get to see him race a few times and if he wasn't first he was close to it. He drove a good race....

Doug's Scorpions were very unique. They were wood from the sheer line up and fiberglass on the bottom pads and tunnel. I think the transom was also glass. The fibreglass portion was taken from either a Zonker-Miles or a Kitson-Miles as I recall.
As far as "fat" engines were concerned, that phenomenon was all over the sport from both Merc and OMC factories. I never paid attention to the Chrysler stuff so I have no idea what came out of that group.

I know OMC had actually proposed 110ci V-4 crossflows at one point, but backed off at the OPC commission's request.
Rich, do you recall any specific "fat" engines in use?
