Not to be ignorant- but what does a pickle fork do over a full frontal tunnel design?

    Thx-

Its a good question, the pickle fork front brings the boat into better aerodynamic balance at higher speed by shifting the center of lift back and the center of weight (center of gravity) forward. This makes the boat less likely to blow over (flip).

The Switzer brothers understood this in the early 1960's and applied it: http://forums.screamandfly.com/forum...d.php?t=206611

Its all in Jim Russell's book http://www.aeromarineresearch.com/

Talked with Billy yesterday and he confirms he built the first SEEBOLD tunnel in 1974. Have to agree with WILLA-------190 looks like one of the first SEEBOLDS. --------C'MON, IT'S DISCUSSION TIME !!!!!!

But!!!!!! Picklefork hulls also give you a lot less warning when the sumbitch finally does blow over........ and since you are going faster in most cases then you would have gone in a full tunnel...it also hurts a LOT more.

It's that little thing called 'PROGRESS'. From 100 hp to 200 in less than 10 years. From full tunnels to pickles---about 10 years. From 70 to 130 mph about 10 years. From getting hurt badly at 70 mph. to walking away just wet from a safety cell at 130, about 10 years. So T2X, can't agree that you HURT a lot more in an incident. Safety cells take up 90% of the impact . Thank God. The mortality rate would have been horrendous without them.
Remember in the early 70's on the European circuit we lost 7 drivers in one season.

    Advent of cells

The era of the v8 omc tunnels wasnt real good, that was when the cells came in, like i think from memory it was 1984 and there were 5 deaths, only 1 driver tom percival that i can think of off hand, ive got alot of info at my mums house but thats 2500km away(1560miles) bad time for racing in general not just tunnel o/b tim

    Seebold boats.....

I sent Billy an email yesterday and asked those same questions. When did he start and did he build a full nose? Sorry T2x, but unlike the noise I get from Jackie, you know I almost always buy into your ramblings....I just can't on this one. When I try to remember a full nose Seebold, not one light bulb goes on upstairs, so I figured I better ask the builder.

Until Billy tells me different, I am also sticking with what I said about him and Cees building identical boats. Maybe what I didn't clarify is that I'm refering to the Team boats for the T3, not the "U" and "S" hulls.

If Billy says he only built pickleforks, he's wrong as well... Ask him specifically about the two hulls I mentioned, the very first one he brought to St Mary's (but didn't race)....and the hull he sold to George Nicholson on Lake Hopatcong.

Now as to the (V-6) Velden's and Seebold's being identical....

Obviously the cowls were'nt the same....and if you look at side by side pictures I would almost bet the forward dead rise is different..........

P.S. Both of the hulls in the picture you posted.....are Veldens.

I also remember the year (1976) that Merc and OMC squared up at St Louis with the OZ rules (Methanol and Nitrous) and Merc still had the low cowl Moli's, while OMC was using the (then brand new) Velden hulls. I agree that Billy built smaller hulls as the originally where designed for the T2x. Cees debuted in the states with the bigger V-6 hulls. A year later all of Merc's boats were Seebolds and some had been stretched to accomodate the v6's while others had deeper tunnels for Bristol and Paris.........

Man! it must be nice sitting on your arse in the south of France....you're my hero. See ya next year at OFF?

Hiya Rich, Remember after the ruckus with Merc and OMC. the blacks went to 2 liters for all intents and purposes and chest thumping. There were 2.4 ltr motors ,but only for offshore and Stateside use. In the early FONDA years we ran every kind of tunnel hull you ever heard about--even a Velden [Tony Williams], it was a bit of a lemon and Tony soon got rid of it. We were strictly 2 ltrs but with all sorts of mods allowed. Heads ,manifolds, rods, pistons, carbs, props. gearcases. As long as it was 2 liters, that's all that mattered. You just pissed me right off Rich, it's time for a change in my life, i have never sat on my arse and done nothing, but i think it's time to pester the inhabitants of the US for a while. Have put the house on the market and am about to become your worst nightmare. PS. I AM NOT JOKING. JRW.
