    Mercury V-6's horsepower - Bridgeport ?

Wanted to find out more about the history of the Mercury V-6 and years and horsepowers and what year did the bridgeport - bridged exhaust come out? How was the 200 hp Black Max for a reliable motor?
Want to be prepared for my next step from Inlines!

    2.4 bridgeport 245 hp,
    2.5 260/280 hp

    200 2.4 EXCELENT MOTA...

v6 started in 1976 as a vertical reed 2.0L then it grew to 200 hp as vertical reed in 78 or 79.. 2.4 horizontal 7 petal in 1980-82 was 225 hp... the strongest 2.4's were probably the late 80's.. 85-91.. then the 2.5's came out and they go up to what we have today....

2.5 have more torque but on light hulls it doesnt matter...2.4's can run with the best of them. ask T-rex

4-16-2014. 25 years old today... the fishin boat doesnt look to bad for a classic does she

things that were are no longer as they are today...

    Mercury 2.4-V6 info needed

The Mercury 2.4 V6 years 1985 threw 1991 what were the horsepower ratings and did a certain year switch to chrome bore and earlier years have a steel liner/bore?
    Thanks,

From a 1989 Mercury high performance manual.

Bridgeport carb nicasil = 220 propshaft hp
Bridgeport efi nicasil = 240 propshaft hp
Bridgeport carb Mod VP chrome bore = 252 propshaft hp (must use 100LL AV gas)

7400 I THINK IS WHAT THE MANUAL SAYS
    I Ran mine @ 8300
the 2.4 200 and the bridgeport are 2 different animals
both are great but the 200 was more of a consumer thing then hi perf
there is a way really make them run but its time consuming.
    but still an excellent motor
the bridge port was made to run @ high rpms
the nicasil bridgeport was the predicessor of the 260 motor

as far as the comparison to the 2.5.... i think that the 2.5/200 is a more versitile motor that can cover both stock and high perf simply because of the ability to change port timing .
I run a modified 2.5/200 steel bore on my tunnel boat
however i like the old nicasil bridgeport blocks enough to have one at the shop.
I think that your next step from an inline should be to a stock 2.5/200
then you can change the motor accordingly

It wasn't a switch "to chrome bore"............... that's the way the first 2.4's were. If there was ever a production steel sleeved 2.4 I'm unaware of it, but I never bought a new one after about 1980 and went through almost a decade of disinterest in Mercs after the blowover damn near killed me in 1981, so I'm not saying for sure that they didn't.

This was the only 100% accurate post in this thread so far:

    There was not a 2.0 200. The first 200 was 2.4, not sure what year, 1978, '79 or '80?
The first Merc V6 was the "1750", 1976 from what I recall. A 2.0 L 175 HP rated at the DRIVESHAFT, as the rules stated back then.
The Bridgeport horn EFI is rated at 240 HP at the propshaft (by today's rules) at 6500-7000 RPM, and this is also according to the manual.
They run well up into the low to mid 7's without trouble, but many turn them harder.
(The 245 was a later HP 2.5 carb motor by the way)
All 2.4 200 motors are chrome bore unless they have been re-sleeved.
There were several different versions of the 2.4 200 block especially in the early years: Fingerports vs none, two piece heads vs one, horizontal reed blocks vs vertical, etc.

From 7000 to 7500 then it drops off fast on the dyno.

John, is there a real difference between the carb and efi on the same motors, on a dyno?
I've heard the carb motors were just downrated on paper to justify the extra cost of efi! Is this the case?

    Thanks, Alan

Yes, you are right. The stock carb 2.4 BPs I have dynoed have no trouble making 240 HP at 7500 RPM. All the port timing is the same on all of them. The European Mod-VP carb models had high compression heads and would pull around 250 HP.
