There are not enough adjectives to describe what a beautiful job you have just done. Thanks for taking the time to share this build with us.

    Good Morning Gents,

I’ve pulled the trigger on the purchase of Randy’s Talon build detailed here, so thought I’d make this post to inform that this art is moving on from its home in Randy’s art gallery…..sort of a transition from one chapter to the next. Got a tour of the boat in person by Randy’s over this last weekend.

I’ve been playing with small racing outboards since the late 60s, and in 2012 moved into medium-sized boats central to Scream&Fly. This new Talon is gonna be interesting. I’ll post a few reports here once I have it in hand.

I decided that since I have other 100+ stuff, I don’t need to go 100 now in a boat like this. 90+ will be fine. I place a higher priority on stout builds that’ll resist damage, and second-to-none build quality. The Activator I currently have is stout… it’s a late 80s boat without a crack anywhere. This Talon is built stronger than many, so it likely offers the same potential…long life with no cracks/blemishes/whatever. We’ll see.

I chose this boat in particular because of Randy’s reputation for functional and aesthetic perfection, and because while I’m willing to speculate on known build quality toys (cars) and will buy in advance of the build, I concluded that this fast boat equipment and particularly the rigging and paint work are not the same as mass-production high-end cars. Since I’m relatively new to judging this stuff anyway…. I needed to buy one I could see in a completed condition, from someone who has a reputation of producing a highest-quality finished product. So far, so good.

It’s moving to Northern Idaho where the lake is deserted on weekdays, and the tow from the garage to the private launch ramp is maybe 200yards. It will never be in the water for more than a few hours at a time, and will always be stored indoors. Once it’s delivered, it will spend no time on public roads. Same as the Activator. Should keep it in its current condition.

I’ll keep Randy and y’all posted.

It was great meeting you Jim. Not many people would fly 3000 miles to look at a boat and then fly back in less than 24 hours. I like selling stuff to someone who appreciates the work I put into it. My wife bought sheets today so I can spread them on the boat before I shrinkwrap it. Don't want it to get scratched ya know! Good luck with it and always keep in touch. Thanx, Randy

That boat is built well for sure. I remember going over it when Randy first got and commenting on how nice the glass work was. He had a really nice platform to put his finishing touches on and it turned out beautiful. The good news is that if you want the boat to go faster later on, you should be able to fulfill that need with new V-8s. Hope you have fun with it.

Hi J, I considered your early observations during the build when contemplating this boat...I appreciate stuff that's well made to last. And yeah, I'll never sell a twin to the CFO, but a motor replacement someday?.....It's possible as you say. Not sure what the insurance company (Foremost through Wozencraft) would say, and I want the liability insurance just 'cause I do. Not an issue yet. This thing will probably do high 80s at elevation, which the CFO will accept for now. Thanks for your note! unkie

Thought it appropriate to update with this next chapter. The boat now lives in a relatively remote private forest of N Idaho on Cd'A Lake. Still like new because it's cared for. No cracks, no paint failure, no flaws, no issues. As hoped. Gets dusty sometimes.

It's tank, as I'd expected and as explained in the first few posts on this thread. Big bumpy lake, though good water some of the time. 2000' elevation. This boat is solid and is a comfy ride over the top at 80.
I ask myself from time to time if I should hang a 400 or 450 on it, but the 300 has been completely reliable, I don't know what the liability insurance company would say, and I know the Chief Financial Ossifer says: "DENIED". Mebbe later. Besides, I've been spit out of race boats and really don't wanna come out of this at 100 if something fails. Maybe the only things holding me back are fear and good sense.
    Thanks again, Dr. R !
