Whether you support electric technology or not, this is impressive
65 pound outboard pushes a 14 foot hydroplane to 121 mph. What is a 200 pound outboard (three times the power) capable of pushing a canopied STV or one of Jack's lightweight QS1 hulls to in 800 feet.
If I was going to get into drag racing, this would be a very interesting route to go. It has the potential to put everyone on their ear and you wouldn't need to worry about distance running and charge life.

Someday a lightweight motor and lightweight batteries that have longevity. That would be something.

The tech behind these motors is insane as well. Flux Marine helped them, using their Axial Flux motors, also called pancake motors, they look like thin cylindrical plates that are stackable for higher HP versions. Koenigsegg is using them in their cars at each wheel. https://www.thedrive.com/news/heres-...r-makes-800-hp
This is the future of electric outboard design IMO. Power to weight is unmatched.

I saw that story.
They used a Pro OB Hydro.
That style/size boat has run low 130’s w/a opposed 4 cylinder 2 stroke in the kilo and I think low 110’s on a 3 lap oval course.
Cool technology for sure but, I like engines, porting and noise!
When Unlimited Hydros went to turbines, a bunch of fans, including me, quit watching.
Same for the current class of F-1 car racing which are running hybrids.
I need high compression, custom pistons, heads and a gorgeous exhaust system!
A bigger electric motor and more batteries just ain’t the same.
I salute and support the elec guys efforts but for racing, etc, not the same.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

[QUOTE=noli;3406254].
these kids were working and testing this in my backyard and I knew nothing about it....muhahaha...Good info, thanks Joe
That little D Class hydro would be cool to run in the protected coves at LOTO. No noise, means no complaints from the homeowners.

That little D class would be fun to run one of the protected coves at LOTO. No noise would get you no complaints. My old D class had megaphones on it and my ears are still ringing 35 years later...

In an announcement on the Princeton Electric Speedboating Facebook page, the team expressed its excitement after Big Bird—its 14-foot Pro-Outboard hydroplane featuring a 200-hp, three-phase AC permanent magnet motor that weighs just 65 pounds coupled with a 400-volt battery pack with an energy capacity of 24 kWh, became the fastest electric boat in the world.
Before jumping for joy over this "new technology". I must first employ a bit of common sense.
An electric motor, at least the ones I have purchased, did not come with an adapter, cowl, clamp bracket, center section or lower unit. Most however came with a single or dual V-belt pully in the neighborhood of 3 to 3.5 inch's.
Total weight .. while not mentioned , will perhaps be a bit more ..
I do own a three phase AC electric motor. It takes an "Inverter" to run in my building, which is also wired AC. I'm not an electrician, but I would imagine that to run it from a DC power source .. it would take an additional inverter / converter in the system ..
As gator pointed out .. when pitted against a typical powerplant for that hull .. A 4 cyl two stroke .. it's down 15 - 20 mph. Why wasn't that part of the ground breaking headlines ...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_chair
It seems that during the turn of the last century, there was confusion as to which was the most humane way to kill convicted felons .. just like our unimpressive "new" wunder boat, they used both AC and DC current. It didn't mention it, but does anyone know what substance was used on the sponge between the condemned mans head and leather cap / electrode. ???
I have some work that needs to be done on my milling machine. I can run a water hose inside .. let a lawn sprinkler run a good half hour before anyone who still thinks water and electricity should go hand in hand , steps up and turns the machine on ...
They useta-hafta take someone fishin, to get rid of em. Now they can just say, hey CRUD, would you hook up the battery charger ...

I think they did fine for a student engineering project. Would be interesting to know details and weights of all the components but they may not want to disclose everything. Could be some proprietary stuff from their vendors.
In a completely different vein, I like what these guys are doing up in BC. https://www.edisonmotors.ca/ Basically an off highway semi tractor with fully electric powertrain and onboard diesel recharging. Good sense of humor, they named their prototype "Topsy" after the elephant Thomas Edison executed as a stunt about how his DC power grid was safer than Nikola Tesla's AC.
