05-28-2018, 03:57 PM #977Ironic you would be the one to ask . My eye's keep going to your location in the top RH corner . I had been 198 - 199 mph plenty of times . My first time hanging a duce on the board was 18 years ago at the rained out National event held at Red River Raceway . If you make it out there , tell Nelson and Marla .. "Tubie" say's hello .

I was there. That track now known as Thunder Road Raceway has changed hands several times. I don`t know who owns it now but they are trying to make it work. They have had some big events with the no-prep gang which is something I just don`t get. It`s a race track so make it the best it can be. I care nothing about watching 2,000 hp cars cut back to 1,000 just so they can hook up. Spray that glue and let the big dogs eat!

First thing to do is start with designing another boat. That boat ain't going to 176. In case anyone does not know, aero becomes critical at such speeds. All you have to do is look at the Second Effort boat to know they understood this. A four point hull (five with the prop) that runs dead level will not get there.

The rear sponsons needed to be made larger to support the weight of an engine hanging off the outside rear of the boat . Now granted , the rear's are pretty wide to support the weight . They can always be notched or "running pads" added to get the last couple of mph a lot easier than fishing the whole thing off the bottom .
Short of the rear notch's , it pretty much mimics the bottom unlimited picture ...

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I thought they put those big pontoons on that boat because they wanted to drag race it , at one point ?
I grew up on the Niagara river , they had a park in Tonawanda ( which means swift flowing water in a Indian dialect) with a HUGE time clock , because they raced inboards
and flat bottom ski boats , they have a flying start, water was ruff because of a six mile per hour current ( right above Niagara Falls)
It was pitifull to watch the Hydro's to TRY to get on plane ... nature of the BEAST,
I'm sure Monty's motor is making more power , He has a LOT of experience with Nitrous , like 25 years , has his own pistons made by Wisco , Motec Ignition , with
Many years of experience on set up ... It's one thing to be able to buy the right stuff , another thing to know how to make it all work together .
In any form of racing set up is Key.Last edited by CUDA; 05-29-2018 at 07:21 PM.

The outrigger boats look like they have a metric butt load of aero drag. Especially the front end with the struts and all the intersections. Compared with the record holder, a wild guess is it might need three times the horsepower. And only gets worse as you go faster. Would be good to see someone get one running well and find out.

They run them in Top Fuel.
They started running them yrs ago to try and prevent the blow overs they were all seeing when the speeds got to regular 200's at the lights.
we built one for Pro O/B oval course racing, 40 yrs ago.
Did it for same reason after my boss blew over.
Ours didn't work either.
Went from using designed in lift (hull) to lift the boat off the water to zero lift and skimming the sponsons across the surface.
As to this design coming from an RC model, I tried that in the early days too.
And failed.
I studied and found that very little crosses over on high speed planing hulls and hydroplanes.
But, I could be wrong.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I’m curious as to how fast they ever got it to go, no question it was a monumental effort and some outside the box thinking.
The gentleman the built the rear sponsons is a well know boat builder.2023 TUFF 25

If you don't have brute force, then stop looking at boat designs and start thinking about aircraft. Like a Rutan Long-EZ with an outboard instead of the Lycoming. Just fly it in ground effect. Nothing but the prop tip in the water. I actually think this could work. Shorter wings and a lot of dihedral to keep them dry. Some sort of pad or runner bottom for take off and landing. Probably needs a ski pole to convince them it is still a boat.
