My dad raced his 15' Power Cat "Double Trouble" in the '60s with twin 1500s. He endurance and drag raced it. In the drags, he raced the 70 mph bracket class, and it would run that speed in the 1/4.

Does anyone happen to know the minimum width required for a transom to accommodate two inlines?

Since 1500's did not come out till the 70's I am guessing he owned the boat since the 60's when it
had the 4cyl engines in the middle photo.. Nice looking rig, Those early years of drag racing when
you qualified for a bracket by your top speed in the quarter and then who ever could ET the quickest
won the trophy for the bracket made for some fun racing between all kinds of boats.

Lots of memories in those photos. I was at the Marine Stadium and saw the flip that appears in one of the photos.

Thanks for the correction. I know NOTHING about those old motors. Whatever those motors were, they pushed that little PowerCat to 70 mph in the 1/4. And although fun, my dad said he got very frustrated racing the mph classes back then, because he had a very quick accelerating 70 mph rig, but he would get beat by guys in flats that were actually capable of 80, because they'd let out of it before the lights and get there first. The sandbagging got real bad I guess. Later on (in the early '70s) he drove the Miss Molly Bee in some 1/4 mile races, having recorded a best run of 117 mph.

Very cool pics.
For fun, I measured the transom on my LTV. It is almost 30" wide. I don't think that's nearly wide enough. If I understand 21" centerline correctly, I'm assuming 42" total minimum.
That's a shame, because I'm sure the hull could carry the weight with no problem.Last edited by mastertrax; 08-21-2012 at 09:47 PM.

I think 21" centerline means 21" from the center of one motor to the center of the other. How wide could the clamp be? 18 inches? That would give you a total width of 39" and I doubt the clamps are that wide so it could be less.

On a vee you want them as close together as possible....I recall we squeezed them down to 18" or less.....
Cats of course are spread out to be lined up as close to the inner tunnel wall as possible without the LU peeking out into the tunnel (straight).
P.S. Cats are faster.......20 Foot Switzer Wing 2 X S3000 (Dust'n the Wind II)

Hmm, I'd lprobably have to mod the transom on the LTV to make it work, and it's too nice a hull to jack with that way.
>>>>I wonder if some kind of plate or bracket could be fabricated to bolt onto the transom in order to extend it's reach on either side a little bit.
T2X, I was under the impression from what several folks have said that about the best I could expect from a cat was somewhere in the low seventies. Seems like with 250 hp or so total at a little over 500lb worth of motors, there should be at least a little more potential. Any further thoughts?
