Agreed, ^^ and even more so if you live in an area where you have hills/mountains.

You would be amazed at how well a F450/550 stops a load compared to a f250/350 truck. You don't even know 10k is back there with the 1 1/4+ ton trucks.

Most modern trucks have 4 disc setups capable of stopping some massive loads....now my old 74 ford on the other hand, is not . Your ram pulling and stopping 3000lbs is a piece of cake

Many good suggestions but the most important thing I have found is using common sense and good judgement when towing with or without brakes!
Salt water even with a stainless brake system needs attention at all times if you plan or like having a good operating/working system.

I ran 4 wheel SS discs on my Donzi 22's trailer. Surge system with electric lockout for reverse. They didn't work nearly as well as having brakes on 1 axle (on my heavier Grady 226 trailer). My theory is the pressure to each disc was less when divided over 4 brakes instead of just 2. With SS discs on one axle, I couldn't even backup the trailer unless the electrical reverse lockout was applied (Or override by sticking a screwdriver in the hole to block the surge piston). They worked great. Just hose them off after dunking at the ramp.

Another safety feature is if the trailer comes off the tow vehicle, the brakes get applied.

You can have all the braking in your truck possible but when your braking hard and the trailer isnt its pushing the back of the truck to one side or the other. If your braking hard your also swerving to some extent. Trailer brakes keep the trailer under control and FOLLOWING the truck not trying to pass or jackknife it. Throw in a wet road and the problem is worse.
Ive towed heavy trailers with and without brakes and the handling under even moderate braking is very different.

Wet slick road plus panic stop = anti-lock brakes letting you go right through an intersection with a heavy boat or other heavy trailer. That said, I do not have brakes on either my Hydrostream nor my Allison trailers. I would not tow my 24 footer w/o them. I chose Kodiak Dacromet & I wash them after every launch in salt water.
