Good info TUFFboat, also love the new 16; nice boat
I'l probably just keep the bottom stock if thats the case though, it would also be outa my budget to get a core put in + the work needed on the bottom so thanks for that heads up

Also cool to read about another winder getting into the 70;s

I've had this boat for just over 2 years and its a blast. It first had a 150evinrude bolted on the transom, and it took a while before i learned about the whole balancing concept. I tried out a bunch of props 2 weekends ago and it walks very little with a 14.25x29p srx especially compared to my 14x26 chopper which i find undriveable wot w/ just me. Not an easy boat to drive at speed i'll agree, but its a helluva ride for any passenger and very rewarding to b able to hold it at WOT. Theres also a guy on my lake with another ss16/175merc and he goes 70 all day with just him and a crazy amount of countersteering. but i know 70 is possible in this boat stock, although not ez and takes alot of seat time/setup

Raceman, try this link it should take you right to the front page. http://www.sidewinder-boats.com/port...s.php?name=Jig
if not try a google search: sidewinder-boats , should b the top link.

Heres a pic of the bottom of a 16 Ron, look like ur rapid craft?

Heres another 16, one of the Milford brothers. Cant remember how its setup although it is a stock hull.
Do you have any pictures of this sidewinder? It looks like it's in great shape. I want to see what that paint looks like. lol. Nice picture ... let's see a few more!

Since I last posted on this thread I found my old 18' boat that I bought new (THANKS TO RLP HERE) and also an 18' jet that's probably too rough to fool with, but I may do it one day any way. Since I last sold the green boat it got these nasty black highlights on the gold and some apparent re paint on the sides to hide the fading. It also looks like the deck may have either been sprayed over with the green or just clear coated. Originally all of the green was one color with the gold metalflake highlights, not the two tone like the picture shows. The floor in it is horrible now, and I'm going to get that done. It's still got the '78 model 2.4/200 on it that I bought new for it in '78. I'm seriously considering putting a pair of 1500XS's on it for the cool factor once the cosmetics and structure get done. I'm going to run the center two strakes all the way to the rear similar to my Pachanga and do all the green and gold over, losing the black highlights. I've sold the green boat and bought it back several times. It'll never get sold again in my lifetime. I bought it new in 1974.

Great that you found your old 'Winder. I've owned 2, a 16 SS that had a 150 OMC on it, and I still have a 16 Low Pro. The SS and Low Pro I found to drive totally different. The SS with the 150 was great to about 60 mph, anything over that and it turned evil !! Max I ever got out of it was about 65, with the 150 and a 6" jackplate. I tried every prop I could get my hands on, and never got it to calm down. The Low Pro is a much more stable ride, it started with an old 115 OMC, and was good for about 55 mph. I had a pad added, and a modded V4 on it, that was good for maybe 160 hp, and about 65 mph. Still not enough for me, so now I've got a 235 on it. It still needs more set up, and I need more seat time with the 235, but best speed so far is about 74. It's fine for a bit, but if you get behind the boat on steering, it quickly gets evil when the chine sets in.

The pics of the SS show a 140 V4 on it, they were taken the last weekend I had the boat, I detuned it for the new owner, so he wouldn't injure himself or his family in it

In mid to late 70's I was buying some Hydrostreams from 2 out of town dealers and selling 'em locally since there wasn't a local dealer. I took a 16' Sidewinder with a 1750 on trade against a Vector with a Merc 2000. I thought it was the most evil boat I ever sat in. The local Merc dealer, a good friend who I got all my engines from, considered himself a great boat driver and said he thought it was just my lack of skill. I'll never forget what he said when he came back to the dock: "God couldn't drive that boat 65 miles per hour and supposedly he's a pretty good boat driver". From a styling standpoint, I still think they're among the best designs ever done.

A year after I got my 18 I was at the dealer and he was rigging a brand new blue metalflake 16' er with a '75 model 1500. Those blue stickers with the big 1500 letters in blue on the top cowl really set off the blue metalflake on the boat. It was one of the best looking boats I've ever seen.

The bottoms are rounded V rather than having a square edged pad, and as such they are a bear to drive at speeds in the low 60's and become downright impossible after that. The ARE a very good all around recreational boat though and I'd really like to find an 18 in reasonably good shape myself.
Yep , selling it now to a buddy that has a young son into skiing so more power to him . I am helping him through a minor floor rebuild and then I will turn him loose . He says I can go skiing anytime so I may take him up before I die !!

    We have a 2012 "Spectre 15ss" (14 ft actual), which is a copy of the Sidewinder, with a 93 90hp 3cyl.

It does have a modern pad, 10 inches wide, and we've gotten a best of 58.5 gps with two adults.

With a 24 chopper, we can cruise 40-48, and air it at 53.

That is our daughter on the bow, it is really "her boat". This summer she will be able to reach the hot foot, and steer it!

If you want fun, find a 14ft'er, they came with a pad, add a 90hp yammy mod and I'm told they're FUN.
