    1988 IOGP Jacksonville Grand Prix

Crazy how rough of condition they ran this race in. They cancelled the SST140 and the top tunnel boat class (F1?) but ran Mod VP. Several of these races are posted on youtube. This is one of the better quality videos. Cool seeing so many of the hulls we enjoy being run hard in their intended purpose.

The rough water caught up with one competitor.

If you notice, the light blue hull has one of the first safety cockpits. This driver just powered thru the rough water while the other guys put a lot of their energy in just staying in their seats. Safety cockpits were not mandated for Mod VP (yet) but when they were, the number of series entrants plummeted ($$$). One of the primary reasons why Mod VP died. I don't think IOGP returned to this site after this one. Better suited for offshore closed course racing. The top tunnel class was called "Champ". Series promoter was not allowed to use the title "F1". F1 belonged to OMC's V8 engine race series. The late 80s were a weird period of years for 2 competing series programs. Impossible for the average race spectator or sponsors to understand.
