WMH Versus WMV Carbs
Any benefit to the WMV carbs over the WMHs? Like better idle, or better performance, or better fuel mileage?
I see the WMVs have 6 idle air jets and no progression jets for all three carbs, whereas the WMHs had only 3 idle air jets and 6 progression jets. Seems fewer jets on the WMVs may be an advantage.
Although keeping track of all of the different sizes on the WMV idle jest may be a pain. Also, the idle screw adjustments are strange because some are 1 1/2 and some are 1/78 turns. This could drive you crazy too.

been reading older posts and someone said the guys on here mostly run the older WH because they are easier to "tune", maybe because like what you said many jets and functions on the newer ones to get right

[QUOTE=Merc 2.5;3267297]I haven't run wmh but I have run wmv18s (200) which is supposed to b the best wmv and my wh46 tuned to my motor ,run alot better , more rpm, more snappy imo
Merc 2.5
My son and i are building a 175 2.5 for a 2400lb bass boat and we are using some wmv18s. we have some wh40s on a 150 2.0, i found out that the wh40s are the larger opening so im not worried about that if used.
We need the best fuel mileage that we can get from a carb, unfortunately we dont have the money for efi so thats ot of the question. This motor will have cut heads to 140comp, rods slots worked, stuffers, cc reeds, chest work, oiler deleted and stuffed. everything that can be done by hand except port height work, thats beyond the realm that i want to get into.
Do you have any suggestions on how to setup the wmv 18s or what other carb might be better, i am willing to get rid of the wmv 18s if needed. This is going to be his collage bass fishing tournament boat.
Your help or anyones help would much appreciated.Last edited by SJD1974; 01-25-2025 at 08:14 AM.

We are looking to hit 65. Our current 150 2.0 gets us to 55mph at 5600rpms, that's with 2600lbs.
I was thinking about being able to go up to a 25p with the added torque of the 2.5. Hopefully.
My son alone in the boat can hit 60mph, as in the picture.1988 Bass Tracker 1800FS Tournament W/ Mercury 175 XRI 2.5

Your getting ready to make a bunch of misery for yourself. Stick with the carbs for the application. Whatever came with the 175, use those carbs. With the changes you are talking about, your only gonna need to up the mains by .002 (unless you've been hacking on the ports). All the other circuitry in the carbs will handle what your doing.
The 2:1 gear is a good choice. You will like it. Make the torque with the gear, let the motor spin the prop.
The tuner on your 2.0, unless its a XR2, is restrictive. find something better.
Going from a 2.0 to a 2.5 is like comparing apples and hand grenades. Don't "eff" it up by trying to "Gold Plate the Honda"

This motor is a combination of parts, we don't have any 175 carbs. The only carbs we have are the WH40s that came on the 150 2.0 that's currently on the boat and the WMV 18s that we got from a friend. The tuner that is on the 2.0 that we are currently using has been cleaned out and shortened to 6 inches, its all we have right now. This motor will have cut heads to 140comp,(mild) rods slot work, stuffers, cc reeds,(mild) chest work, oiler deleted and stuffed. There will not be any port work done. Does the work that we are performing seem ok?
Well i guess we .will have to find some different carbs and tuner.
I really appreciate your help.Last edited by SJD1974; 01-25-2025 at 01:16 PM.

The tuner is not a deal breaker. The shortened version you have is the same that is used in the Promax 200. The right carbs will make things easier...

This is the work we have done. Going to polish up the chest a little yet. Don't know if anymore should be removed from the rod slot area, the small amount that we have removed is what I have read. Didn't want to remove to much.

Unless your really good at tuning, (most aren't) stop. Put it together and run it. The switch from 2.0 to 2.5 will will achieve your goals.
You are pissin in the wind, up hill, with the chest work.
Stuffing with spacers won't hurt. Reeds on their own only add protection if you ingest one.
Epoxy in the puddle drain system will make a motor that is a pain around the docks...
If you want to do something that will make a difference, Pull the sleeves and cut the ex port to 200 specs put em back in.
Adjust the mains for the added compression and the carbs you have should be perfect.

What most people don't realize is a carb that is jetted properly from the factory is self tuning to a point, which is a fairly large margin. more air pulled, more fuel is pulled.
My current lake motor is a carbed 225 promax with a 1 inch spacer and ebay 18's. The limiter caps were missing and the needles were all over the place so they went 1 1/2 out and some fiddling from there. I went up 2 sizes on the mains to be safe and it blubbers at 7500, the plugs are on the dark side. That's fine, it doesn't need to be spun any higher and it's kind of a self imposed rev limiter. it's not making any power up there anyway but will still pull a 30 that far. The off idle chuggies are much much less than the 2 circuit carbs and over all it runs much better.
I take the consumer blocks, put 225 pm sleeves in,fill he oiler cavity, do the rod slot opening, some minor work in the chest and dump holes 32-34 cc heads and vertex or wsm pistons. Makes for a very nice running motor that will run on 87-89 octane for a very long time.

I tried the 18s on my mild ported ff motor and then on my now carbed 240 sportjet (225 promax), port , exhaust work, compression, but i also swapped carbs and compared em to wh46 and wh20s and with each set carbs tuned to motor, seat of pants feel for me went hands down to wh20s. I know gas milage ain't as good with wh carbs but power definitely there , on mine anyways. Actually sold wmv18s , I tested back to back with both on rich side to get best comparison on 2 diff 2.5s ive had people say 18s were better so idk prob comes down to tuning. Not trying make carb wars ,just my experience from doin lots carb swapping tryin find best setup
