    Tuff 25 speed with 300XS, 300R

Cheerfully lifted from Facebook. More then one old guy can cut and paste

"Had a great day of testing. Had a customer re-power his Tuff25 from 300xs to 300R…seeing some great results.
This is a standard build boat, non-carbon to bump and grind.
300xs with minimal testing 99.5mph bravo prop,
300R with same bravo prop 97mph into the revlimiter hard.
Put a cnc Dewald on 107mph on a mid summer day humid hot slow and full gas
In the fall better weather and light on gas going for 110mph."

OK, now I am convinced that the 300R is faster on a V bottom, despite the huge gearcase. I had not seen a direct comparison before.

    Wow!

    Thats impressive!
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Yes! Try the wheel first! Then we get a true back to back comparison.

Thats my boat, yes on the dewald prop….BUT the 300R is sooooo much better than my DBR 300Xs (except for the gearcase) Same prop I ran with both motors a 31 pitch Bravo XS required all 8 PVS plugs to be out to get it on plane. 300R, all vents are plugged , full of people full of gas it doesn’t care one bit. Midrange is also a fair bit stronger.
The gearcase is a PIG, makes for some interesting quirks
If only merc would make a twin pinion smaller diameter case it would be perfect…….
    Also other props were tested

300R beats every other 300 ever built by Mercury in so many ways. I have been preaching it since my first one "proof is in the price and availability of the 300 two strokes". The only reason not to switch is $$.

I have to agree that the Sport Master gearcase leads to some interesting handling issues. Couple that with the mushy motor mounts and things can get, um, interesting at speed. Probably a bit less of an issue on something with more than one motor though.

The R has the same size motor as my pick-up truck. It better have more mid-range torque than a much smaller two stroke ...

So now that they have stockpiled motors they cant sell .. and laid off a couple thousand workers ... have the prices tanked ??? Axin for a friend ...

What are the quirks with the gearcase?

More importantly, what is different from the Tuff 24 to the Tuff 25, and your one of one?

I've heard of some folks running torque masters with a nosecone because of the gearcase. I wonder how that'd work

Nothing wrong with the 300xs, specially on lighter boats. The 4.75” case is far superior to the 5.44”n case now offered. Fine on cats, but vee bottoms where you can’t or don’t run fully surfaced all the time make for some interesting transitions while driving.
