I think there is value in a "rough" surface finish on the lower unit... I just haven't figured out how rough.

That's what Daris Allison told me, when I was picking up my XR2002, however primer will not seal the gearcase. That was back in 1986!

When i heat the wrinkle f, i tightens the texture, im thinkin is perfect, rougher than primer. did some parts for my har. dav put em in the oven, came out real nice, hard asa rock, never chipped. you want the water to roll over it, no high peaks. JMO.

Well, I've tested different finishes on Sportmasters along with some other people I know, stock, sanded, and polished. None of us could find any measurable difference on GPS speeds. The tests were on V-hulls, modified V's and full tunnels with top speeds between low 90's and low teens.

Hopefully one of you guys will find that magic 12 mph increase

Put some rain-x on your bottom and try it out. You might get that 2 you need. What we are looking for is hydrophobic coatings.

You want to break up the boundary layer to keep the water from sticking to the gear case. What I would wonder about is how much is too much. Do you add so much turbulence that you effectively aerate the prop? But whatever our opinions do it, find out and let us know.
