    Engine block cylinder plating

Getting ready to rebuild my 1989 Merc 200XRi, I know the cylinders will need to be replated, any recommendations? I'm in mid Michigan.
    Thanks!

Some here have reported good results from getting them sleeved. Rgsauger has a 2.4/200 with some chrome and some sleeved and he runs his motor pretty hard, with no complaints.

    Just throwing that out there.

The "problem" with replating is you have to strip & plate all 6; which is kind of expensive if all 6 don't need it.

That's what I was thinking/remembering from rgsauger's testimonial about why he sleeved his bad cylinders instead of chroming them. Saugs? Do I have that right?

Yep. I burned up one hole so needed a sleeve. One more hole has already been sleeved. You can’t tell it on a compression tester. All around 145 or so. Running Wiseco pistons in all holes. Two have rings for steel and four have rings for chrome. Pennzoil XLF and nobody cares about the mixed pair.

    how bad is your chrome?

All 6 are missing chrome at the exhaust ports. I've never been a fan of coated aluminum vs sleeved, but I'm old. Can I use my stock pistons and new rings (for steel) if I have it sleeved? I'm going to get a quote for replating, who's recommended for re-sleeving?

Thanks, I remember people talking about $800 to $1000, but that was years ago...

You might check James Perry in TN or Chris Carson in FL. Shipping is a wash. James did mine and it was ROUGH when he got it. Great job. Post a pic of your cylinders. Yes to stock pistons with new steel rings if they are ok and not worn into ovals.

Thanks! Going to pull the heads this weekend. Hoping things aren't as worn as a thought they were. It's been quite a while since i replaced head gaskets. I'll post pics when I get the heads off. Might be Sunday, Autorama's in Detroit this weekend.
