Anyone tried this wrench for V6 Merc 7/16 carb nuts?

I didn't put this in the engine tech section because it really isn't very rich with engine tech... so ...

This thing looks like it would be the ultimate Merc carb nut tool... As long as the gear wrench end is thin enough...

I’ve tried every wrench known to man. That little guy would work fine. The key, in my opinion, is to ditch the locknuts and use lock washers and 1/4-28 regular nuts. Either SS or Grade8. That way you can spin them on with your finger, then tighten with the wrench. It seems like there’s always 1 or 2 that you have a hard time getting at with a box end…especially a ratchet box. Either there’s a hose, or the primer, or some linkage in the way…..and it’s different for each type of carb. Anywoo….that’s what I’ve done for years now and it seems fastest/easiest for me.

Thanks Randy. That sounds like an awesome tip. I just did this job but I do this about every five years unless something crops up sooner where it needs it. I’ll definitely give it a go for next time.

One silly question… by “lock washer” do you mean like a split ring? Or a star washer?

I took a cheap wrench and went "to grindin'!" Works great actually. It's the angle of the grind, the thickness of the wrench part, and the ground diameter that all kinda came together to make something that works.

I've got the same setup for the powerhead bolts. Years ago I thought "who the hell would ever use this thing?!" Years later..."Oh this thing is perfect!" lol

I have a few I heated up with a torch and bent them around with a vice to suit my need. Of course this one was a "Crashman". Had to sacrifice... and it took a while to get it to bend like that. This one was to get to one nut off the starter on a 30-60 series John Deere. No way in hell I was going to pay the extortion fee from JD for the factory tool!



And I have several I ground on, cut in half, etc. Those angle head wrenches are nice too. You have to buy a good set though (Snap On). I tried Mac, but they wouldn't hold up. Kept spreading the open end wrenches.

I have a rare set of Snap On HP wrenches. These come in handy as they are long, thin and have a deep box. Kind of like I like my women!

I was the only one in the shop (Beechcraft FBO) that had a wrench that would remove the prop nuts off a Pratt & Whitney PT6.

Note their redundancy after they get below 3/4" You always have a back up.

I would say either. The early OMCs had a star affixed to the nut on the carbs. Never had one come off and reused them several times.

I lost a motor over a set of bowl screws that came loose (probably my fault). After a bunch of money to repair it, I had some SS split rings on every bowl screw!

On aircraft, they say if you can screw a ny-lock on with your hand past the nylon, throw it away. Blue Loctite? Double nut? Again on aircraft they double nut with a thinner nut to lock the other. They also paint the threads so it is easy to find a fastener that is backing off.

I always treated the boat as it was an airplane and never had a problem... Other than blowing up a couple motors and gearcases!
