Wow another blast from the past! I was a slalom skier too, back in the day. Skied on a Jobe carbon v Then went to a Connelly concept. I met my wife 34 years ago at a water-skiing tournament. She worked for the Mastercraft dealership. Married 32 years now. Don't ski anymore but we both love boats and have had different boats most of our married lives. Which is half my life!

The Pope's owned Cypress Gardens Jr was my dad's Boss, Mike Osborn is my dad, I went to school with Dick Pope the 3rd, he was killed in the Keys in a boating accident in his late 20's. Dad was inducted into the waterski hall of fame back about 20+ years ago with one of the Shirely kids, I think Robbie that he taught to ski.

    Way cool!

    Im w/fun too.

Growing up and skiing in Ohio, I always wanted to go to Cypress Gardens.

Then moving to Fla too late to visit it.

I would buy you beer until you fall over, to sit on a stump somewhere and listen to your stories.

The owner of the shop I worked at, and his dad knew the Popes and used to visit.
I would gamble they knew your dad too.

And then, didn’t your family own a boat dealership and race as well??

    Very cool cool stuff!

@David Whats the earliest you've first dropped in the lake? Back in MN, my best was the last week of March. The current from the creek that went through my lake broke a path in the ice, and there I was, in my OS systems dry suit. The only down side was that it wasn't wide enough to turn at speed, so we had to stop to turn around. I think I was in the shower for aboot an hour after that.

I have water skied in Ohio, yes w/ice, every month of the yr.

Funniest was being in my dry suit, in water when the tow boat came around for me and I notice everyone is wearing winter parkas, stocking caps and gloves!

We all had a good laugh.

Our annual "start of summer" was mothers day in N.W. Michigan and I can remember several years being shamed into skiing by my sister going first. Fun times and memories but I don't miss getting in that cold water at all. Stupid stuff we used to do like the annual New Years Eve jet ski ride with Steve Laham "Butches Jet Ski Shop" in downtown Grand Rapids-young and dumb....

Side note, Camille Duval lived in one of our homes on the Marina Property when I was 18 years old. She had a brief marriage with Flat Track motorcycle engine builder Woody Kyle of WKR racing, he did a lot of engine building out of our motorcycle shop and we worked out a deal for him to live there. We had volleyball games in the back yard and she loved to play

Camille was a hotrod and Sammy was my hero back in the days of "living to ski". I can remember making weekly payments to our local marina for my first Connelly shortline in the late 70s. You were exposed to some really cool stuff as a kid for sure. There is a good bit of it that was captured and now on youtube.

Yeah luckily both my parents are still alive, the met skiing at the gardens and are still married 58 years later. My Grandfather used to make all the certified slalom ropes it is where I learned to use a fid and made a lot of my own ski ropes. My Christmas gift to my parents was a letter telling them what an awesome life they gave me with examples.
