AMAZING Custom Mercury 450R!
Johnny Bauer's Eliminator is just incredible with its original gelcoat that shows why Eliminator is so highly regarded. That kind of gelcoat work is something that you almost never see now, and it seems to have been somewhat of a lost art these days.
I saw Johnny's Eliminator at the Suwannee run, and I thought that custom-painted 400R really stood out for its color and how well it matches the boat. Well, an upgrade to a 450R is in the works, and I wanted you to see this work in progress so far. I think the custom livery on the 450R is just right - it's not too complicated, yet it respects the boat's original style. This is a boat I am dying to shoot photos and videos of!
I'll post more when they are available, but for now, have a gander!

Never cared much for the motor paint matching the boat. This may have changed my mind.

Really a nice boat always liked the 23 Daytona and the 450R will fit perfectly.

I've visited the shop and seen the work done on this boat. This gentleman has done a tremendous amount of work on this rig. The custom modifications, rigging and engine paint are spectacular. He has many talents and talented friends.
We've had lot of 23's in our area. Nice to see this one done so nice. Great no drama performance with that setup. Nice to see this kind of talent and dedication is still around.

I’ve seen that boat at the Suwannee and it’s stunning. I’m really excited to see it when it’s complete. There’s a great deal of work going into it.

You know, I’ve never really cared for them either, especially the really colorful West Coast examples from the 90’s. They just kind of erased any brand recognition whatsoever. My goal was to keep it recognizable, but add some of the boat flair onto the engine, as well as to get the colors from the 2.4/2.5 era that would have came on this boat. The twist is all the metallics; it’s hard to mix the solid colors of the gel from the boat with the metallics on the engine, but I like the results. I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not a styling guy. That’s why I resorted to visual aids; painters tape and electrical tape. Don’t laugh, it’s an easy way to get visuals quickly.
Here’s the proto, and I want to say I tweaked it 3-4 times before I settled on this:
Thanks much for the kind words, sir. I believe I still owe you a ride…check your schedule for October!
Thank you as well, sir. Hopefully you get a chance to experience it soon.
As far as the work part of things, I had about 40 hours start to finish on converting the 400R to blue. I’m 65 into this one (not including proto time), and probably have about 5 to go before it’s done. Block sanding three times is time consuming, especially the first time before paint. There’s a lot of bumps and whoops to remove from the stock surfaces. Factory decals are on back order, so I don’t know when it’ll be finished. Pretty sure it’ll run without the decals…

I also do not typically like painted motors, I like the stock look with maybe some decals in the right colors to match the boat. I like simple, I like classic, and I think you nailed it. You will still have that factory look, but with some colors that match your boat well.
I think your goal was achieved.
