if you do the block you need to pull the regulator to make sure the area is open... there is one small area near the omc logo thats solid. I have done a few thru the regulator on the flat area. my picture isn't the greatest obviously i put on an alternator.

I’m guessing you just run the hose wherever you need it to be out of the way and still see it pee… is it ok to leave it open and just pee continually or does it need to be for verification only and then closed off?

I have seen a few burnt just like that.. sucks it takes out the pack too, i kept up a boat with a pair of v8s and the same thing happened when one that was almost new, i put 40 amp fuses in the big red charge wires going to the solenoid but it never had another one fail. Since the stators don't get melted i guess the charge wire gets shorted to ground internally.

leave it open to vent any air from the block and you can tell when the blocks full on start up.

If I am leaving that hose open all the time can I plug the factory pee location and just use the new one?

If your taking about the rear cowling fitting that screws into the rubber outlet leave it... if you have a tube connected to a plastic 90 fitting on the side of the adapter towards the back just cap unless your water pressure gage is connected there, its just pissing out incoming water from the water pump. Your motor appears bone stock on the outside... if the termostats and everything are all intact you really don't have to do this, the regulators fail on their own, china diodes/ scrs or components not large enough who knows? Most guys on here have all kinds of mods so you never know what you have...

Yes. The outside is bone stock. I’m just a little gun shy from going through 3 regulators in 3 trips to the lake. I wanna be able to know without a doubt that it’s getting water up there. Ya know?

You have a blowoff valve? It's not stuck?
And yea after I had one catch fire I don't blame you.
Why I installed the ones at the top of the cylinders they were older 88-92 blocks before, now with the 97 blocks I just took out the blowoff partly because was missing pieces when I got them back was cheaper than buying the parts and the water lines routing was different because of the 2.7 heads /different stat covers and wanted to actually see water coming out there..
You've had three go one after the other.

I need a cure. The one I just put in is on it's way.Stock motor.Haven't had one look overheated, they just all of a sudden start over charging.I even added an extra ground wire to make sure it was a good grd to the block.Pump is new and water pressure is approx 5 psi at idle and 20 - 25 at WOT.Getting sickening putting out the money and not all that fun to change.
89 XP 200If I knew it was going to last this long I would have taken better care of it.

I'd be carefully checking earths, rectifier has to get back to the battery and the pak has to get back to the coils

Brand new battery cables.Good connections at both ends and like I said an added ground from the reg to the block. The stator, trigger, cdi module were all new when I got it.I don't think it's lack of cooling but can't swear to it.Wrenched for a living for 35 + years (auto-tech) but do all my own work on my bike, boat, atv's etc...and have never run into something that eats regs like this.Has anyone ever converted these to an air-cooled reg i wonder.Guess I should do a search.
If I knew it was going to last this long I would have taken better care of it.
