I thought I covered that :
Pre Limiter :
Being that they would rev freely from the airflow capacity .. it's easy to over rev the motor and hurt parts . Not the motors fault … is it ..
Didn't all those boats come with BBC's .. maybe a few had SBC's in the 26 or maybe 28 Cig's .. But for the most part , rat motors .. that means you get the majority of drivers , both good wheel men .. and strokes . My money is on you replaced motors for guys with more dollars than cents .. err .. sense .
My personal opinion , boat motors are meant for boats , and car motors belong in cars .
If your going to run a free breathing big inch motor with no limiter and sail it thru the air with the props out of the water .. it's no different than putting a car in and out of neutral at 100 mph … with your foot on the floor ..
In the early 90's I use to go down to Blue Thunder and buy up .. blown up 509 and 540 inch motors . I wasn't going to tell them that 3/8" valve stems , 3/8's pushrods and 125 pounds on the seat was meant for roofing trucks , not Hi-Perf boats.
Scored cyl wall , didn't matter .. boring it to 4.600 as soon as it got home . Them boat anchor ( no pun ) heads either went in the scrap pile or out the back of the truck and over the bridge .. on the way home .. KaaaSplooossshhh ..
Dart 360's would make just shy of 1000 HP with a .780 lift roller and 300 on the seat . The boating industry supported more drag strips than you'll ever know ..
I love this thread , don't want to see it ruined by words . Please carry on ..
Mid-Life .. He's an honest man as well . I went up to the Dart booth at the PRI show, a kid said , can I help you ? I hope so , I rung the bell at a few races this year , sent in the proper paper work and your one of three dead-beat company's that haven't sent me my money yet .. Dick walked over and said , I'm very sorry sir , I'll personally take care of this next week when I get home . I shook his hand , thanked him .. and he was a man of his word . $300 for heads and $300 for intake manifold. For each race win . And $150 / $150 for each runner-up .. One lump sum check .
I had one Brodex block and one Donovan .. but both those motors had Dart heads on them ..
Cuder .. you forgot about the $100 dollar bill taped to the dash board story .. and wheelies in third gear on a dirt road … maybe those are for another time ..

Back in high school buddy got a 67 maybe 68 ss camaro 396 and it was brand new we got into a race with a 396 el camino he lost it no traction and we hit a telephone pole. No traction at all I think the car had less then a hundred miles on it. Red with a black and white checkerboard top and seats.

I did't know they put big blocks in the early Camaro's I knew of a 1970 with one, my uncle bought a 67 with a 327, that car was never outside, Sunday / summer car, when he died one of his grand kids got it and drove it in western NY winters, turned to trash.
The Cuda name, my mother was a well know competive swimmer so I swam and was tall and thin hence the barracuda nick name, before I could drive I fell in love with the early Barracuda you know the Valiant conversionat the Niagara drag strip those little V8s kicked a$$
good power to weight ratio I guess, very light, I got my sister to buy a 340 Duster in 1970, she just got out of nursing school living at home, I had my own set of keys, she worked nights soo I had fun with it, when I was 17 a friends older brother asked If I would help him rebuild a 1964 327 Vette, not long after the rebuild he said you really like this car huh, He bought a 67 Corvette Coupe factory sidepipes I got the 64 convertible with hard top.We have invented the world; WE see

I see 12,900 SS396 made in 1967, everyone I knew back then ran Chevelle's with big blocks, I have a 496 in the back of my 6.6 durmax van right now
It's a replacement motor for a C7500.
I did buy a 1969 427 tri power Vette ... with out a motor and screwed it up replacing it with a 289 high cam race motor that belonged in a light weigh car, poor match I was 19 at the time. Had a nice factory hood.Last edited by CUDA; 07-05-2020 at 11:40 AM.
