Gene - Thank you for posting that. I had always heard that El Lobo was never recovered and still resided on the bottom of Smith Mountain Lake. Your picture proves otherwise. Any idea what happened to it after it was recovered? Did it race again under a different name?

I witnessed a similar incident in Windermere England.

I do not recall if it happen during testing or in the race. Ken Miles returned to the dock, with his engine hanging at a 45 degree angle. The transom was partially ripped away from his Milesmaster boat's rear-end, with sections of the wood delaminated. It looked like the steering cables saved Ken's engine, from ending up at the bottom of the lake.

Others in the pits, were not surprised, as I was.

The owner of El Lobo I think was Bill Malone of Miami , Ken Burkett was driving, the accident was at the top end of the race course. I know the boat was pretty tore up, I never heard it was repaired. I know Ken never drove it again. I don't think #102 was El Lobo.

Wing Boats the largest platform for advertising on fresh water.

Their time has come and gone for corporate advertisers, to paint their logo on the largest & fastest billboards on fresh water (and some sheltered salt water courses too).

I thought Chrysler owned it--George Thompson was usually in charge(????) John Henry drove it--

Hi Gene - You revived an old memory. I read your post and saw Mike Rudderham's name. Mike lived here on Clearwater Beach. He had a metallic green boat with twin Super BP's. It looked like a Checkmate, but I do not think it was. The boat was named Muck Muck. He also had a smaller V- bottom, perhaps a Checkmate with a 65 hp Merc. He had them on a double decker trailer like yours. The UU boat on the bottom and the smaller one on the top. Occasionally I would see him running Muck Muck in the Clearwater intercoastal waterway. That must have been around 1970.

    Thank you for the memory...

...Charles Bickle, wondering if this fella was related to the Charles Bickle family that started & owned Bradford Marine in Lauderdale?
