    I am guessing high frequency vibration is the culprit here. I don't think blue locktite was not on the market back then. I recall some of the alky racers using safety wire for that very reason.

    Or maybe someone forgot to torque them! Or maybe if they had been running fuel injection it wouldn’t have happened.

    Well.. I raced the Paris 6 Hours 1974 and remember very well when the overall leader (03 Scotti/Evinrude Rotary) passed me sometimes very close, but disappeared at the very end of the 6 hour race.
    I also remember Jackie was not in the entry list for the race.
    Maybe he was hiding behind the two rotary powered boats before the race.
    I also remember the headlines after the race the year before (1973) when OMC and Merc raced the first V6 outboards.
