Most people would be stunned to learn how much these prop balancing jigs cost and how fragile the wheels are. If you let the shaft bump a wheel while you are setting up, you likely make a dent in the wheel and the jig is out of commision until repaired. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. At least the place I worked had their own in-house machine shop to do the repair same day without sending it out. We had a small enclosure so breezes and drafts would not try to turn the props while they were on the balancing jig, these things allow that much precision.

Would it be simpler to use an electronic machine?

I can remember seeing a bunch of castings and half machined castings in the scrap bin at Plant 4 many moons ago. Another Merc project that went nowhere, along with Blackhawk, Blacktrac, Autotrim, Hydrasteer, Culvert drive, hell I can't remember them all! JFL help me out here!
