I could be wrong, but in my opinion I think the DNR harassment stems from a boat accident a few weeks ago about 30 miles south of here on the Savannah river. A guy in an old pro comp hit two with the boat and just about cut ones leg off. A bad situation no doubt to make it worse ding dong fled the scene and abandoned the boat. (look it up on WRDW.com) So IMO we where all guilt by association for having performance boats.
AS far a permits I don't believe there has been any the last few years just a cove party with "prop testing" going on. I cant say I know all the details about the permit stuff other than I was told it was a lot of hassle, hoops to jump through and run around from the core of engineers and DNR. Chummy and Scott Tharpe have organized this event maybe one will chime in. Either way a good time a lot of good people just having a fun.

I organized the event and it’s a rally... if those that want to drag race wanna do so, then they can, but I’m not advertising it as a race nor setting up the drag stuff... the liability and work isn’t worth it IMO. I am currently involved in ODBA so I have my fill of setting up drag racing events.

Very few have any idea of the work and/or expense required to put on an advertised racing event on the water. We used to have one in the small town I lived in. Had both drags and roundy rounds throughout the years. When the drag organizers at the boat club retired I was voted in as heir apparent to take over the duties. I raced and new the organizers well and knew roughly what was involved. Well beyond what I could do so I bowed out. The racing ended that year.
I used to host a river run and did it for 6 years. During that time the local boat club asked me to move our party from my cabin on the river to their island and put on a show for the locals. I was not comfortable with the idea of turning a cookout with fast boats into a race but wanted to help club out as they allowed us to use their ramps due to the city ramps being a complete joke. The club still had permits to shut down river for an event so I looked into putting it back on the schedule. It only took one contact with an organization to put on the event ( timing lights, rescue boat, etc.) to change my mind. It gets expensive fast.

I’ve been to this event when there was drag racing permitted. it’s a great time. Every single event, rally, non-event, river run, race I’ve been to no matter what permits are pulled they still issue tickets for no wake zone. In fl side by side racing is a much bigger ticket but I’ve seen it done no wake zone or not (who would do that
). Point is permit or not they r gonna do their job.

As the originator of this event some 13-14 years ago, I want to first thank Brad for keeping this tradition alive all this time.
I came up with the "King of the Hill" idea after attending a "TRIAD INVITATION ONLY" event Wally held at our lake Clarks Hill. Wally was very smart with his event in that he could maintain control from a liability standpoint(though we did have a guy blow over a GT20 and get life flighted out of there. He was a known local but I don't think he was officially invited). As many of you know how respected Wally is in the boat racing community, we had top drag racers from as far as Texas come to the event. I thought this was the coolest thing on the face of the earth and the tradition began. The only difference was, I opened it up to everyone.
The very first year, we went "outlaw". No permits-No Insurance-No Dive/Rescue Team-No planning and guess what? We got shut down quick. It didn't help that Jerry was terrorizing the same golf course cove no wake zone in a 15' Allison wid a drag mota on it. lol We still had a great turnout but a lot of disappointed people due to the fact DNR wasn't going to allow us to run. Thats when I decided to do it right and get the proper permits, hire a dive team and everything else it took to put on this event correctly. It was held for quite a few more years but just became too large for me to handle by myself and try to participate and enjoy. Thats when I finally threw in the towel and Brad took over. I believe the "Jet Boat" crowd even handled the permit one year since they enjoyed it soo much and wanted it to continue. In the past, we've had the fastest drag boats in the nation duke it out on our outlaw course and as many as 50 boats in the Poker Run at this little ol rally.
With all this being said, I'm here if any of the new organizers need any guidance or direction with the future rally's.
Thanks Again
