    Scattered my 2.0...

I was reading somewhere (maybe in the old “Bassboat Bible”) that guys were running the old 2.0 175’s to 8000 rpm with a 22 pitch prop and seeing 80 mph. Being as I’ve got a an old 2.0 175 the wheels started to turn...

I’ve usually been running a 24 big ear chopper at 6800. Never had any problems. Many gallons of gas over the years, 40:1 with Merc oil...

A guy came by the shop the other day with a wicked looking old OMC (I think) 2 blade wheel. I picked it up cheap for a wall hanger. Noticed it was a 14x22 (stamped on the hub). I thought “hey, I should have all the stuff to chuck this thing up on Old Faithful!!!”

I guess you know where this is headed...

A short trip to the lake later and it was AWESOME!!!

Jumped up on plane and immediately to 7000 rpms. Very little bow rise. A little trim buried the needle on my 8k tach! We were up on the pad and flying like never before! Most fun I’ve had with my pants on, hands down. No bad handling, very little torque on the wheel, HUGE rooster tail.

I dropped the jack plate down a touch to help it get a bite. Lost some revs but got them back with a little more trim. We were really cooking now! Not long after that I backed out and she kinda sputtered to a stop. Hit the key and NOTHING. Trim still works, HMMMMMM...

Popped the face plate off the clamshell and the plastic baffle on the intake is broken. Swing the clamshells open and aluminum falls out everywhere. Major carnage! One rod cap exited the powerhead. I guess the rod bolts didn’t like 8 grand!!!

I guess the rod bolts stretched/broke/pulled out!

I have an extra block (thanks Rock!), a complete extra motor ($50 from a local meth head, he even had the title), a few good cranks, a 260 small bearing top cap and some SPS rod bolts. Lightweight flywheel too. Hopefully the next one will hold together a little better!

    Pics to come...

My internet connection is terrible! Having trouble getting pics to load. Never seen a block this trashed!

It almost cut the top of the block off! The intake is busted right below the top carb! You can see all the way through it...

Anybody have any idea what this prop is? Stamped 22x14 on the hub. Guessing OMC? Had to use the shouldered thrust washer, splined nut, double nut set up to mount it.

It sounded wicked! It was a high pitched noise between a scream and a buzz!!!

I backed out because I was waiting on a Bullet with a 300xs to catch up and as I came off plane it sounded like it chuffed through the reeds twice before it stalled. Hit the starter and no dice. Didn’t even try to turn at all. Hit the trim to make sure there was juice and that worked fine.

When the front plate came off and the silencer cover was busted I knew it was gonna be bad.

Never heard a rattle or a bang, I guess it happened too fast to hear!

Those 2 blade old **** are wall hangers and good for nothing but that. I still have my very early serial # 76 1750 powerhead I ran the sh*t out of for years. With a 28 chopper on a viper it turned 72-7300 every day,all day. People can talk shiz about the old two blades being fast but they beat the **** out of everything from the prop nut to the bow light.

I would probably let it go if you really want it. I’m sure it takes a little load off the top bearing but I’ve already found that my weak spot is the rod bolts...

Been running this motor to 7200 regularly for years. Previous (and original) owner did the same. No problems till yesterday. I wish I had a 3 blade prop that handles as good as this 2 blade did. It was wicked fast and handled great. Would a 3 blade be better? I’m sure it would.

My buddy wanted to ditch the trolling motor before the run, I told him I had a feeling we’d need it...

When the dude brought that 2 blade by the shop I told him just what you said. “It’s a wall hanger,” I gave him 40 bucks for it. I had fun with it, now I have a reason to de-rig this boat and put it together right. The wiring is a rat’s nest and most of the junk doesn’t work (live well pumps, courtesy lights, bilge pump, etc).

The 2 blade did seem to like to run lower than my 3 blades which run pretty much as high as my plate goes. It was about half way down to the mark where I run my through hub props.

The other thing I noticed is that the 3 ram trim wasn’t happy. It gave out one other time on the river running my 27 SRX. I thought I was going to get wet on that one. It gave out in a long sweeping curve. I’m going back to either the original 2 ram or the single ram offshore style.

I may give up on the Ride Guide and go hydraulic too. Will have to see how the budget goes...

Looks like an old Merc Offshore two blade with the popular drag cut on the leading edge.

When you rebuild you should go with the 2.4 200 horizontal front half. They made a million of them and are everywhere. You`ll also need the intake, linkage and so on. It`s worth it.
