Sometimes depending on what it is the serial number can help, but sometimes it’s just not necessary given the issue.
“I have a 225 promax, what are the best plugs to run?”
”please provide serial number AS REQUIRED!!”
um ok, doesn’t matter all 225 promax’s are the same in that regard!
gets annoying. Stopped posting there.
Most good people because of it. And that’s in the high performance section, there is a section for stock motors made the suggestion that the serial number crap could stay in the stock motor section but stop
using that when not necessary in high perf.
What ever very it is what it is.

Its actually a little confusing. there are 2 categories. "Stock Motors" or "High performance 2.0, 2.4 and 2.5".

High performance would be S2000, Bridgeport, 280 etc. People post fishing motors in there

Way to many outboard motor parts to learn about & keep track of, for a younger person in the business, to be expected to help a customer with, off the top of they're head. The model & serial number is just the beginning of any possible help they could give you. Not too much to ask. Same with all sorts of equipment made over the previous decades. Its just the logical thing to start with.

Serial number can be very helpful when ordering parts and identifying what motor you have. I think the post was started to point out that we rarely ask for a serial number here, unless it is necessary.

Ser # search will sometimes indicate updated parts #'s. And some factory tech updates like plug gap for instance. Or even a change of plug #.

Ok, I’m actually having an issue stumping me.
Made same and thread both places. Let’s see what’s the most helpful.
Just for curiosities sake, some good people both places.

There was no drama as far as I was concerned all I did was state that in this case serial number could not help, especially since the poster said it had been modified.
Then I made a long informative post about what the poster should have , he deleted both posts and used part of what I said as his own.
I reported him to al for deleting the informative post, said if anything could have just deleted my post about not needed a serial number. For a promax thrust washer and nut issue.
I’ve had numerous talks with al before , I’ll prolly get banned this time.

It ain’t just us. Go to the Chevrolet dealer and ask for something as basic as a lug nut and you better have your VIN. Gone are the days when you simply asked by name for a part and the parts guy actually knew what you needed and got it for you. Don’t get me wrong, still some good parts people out there but they are a dying breed.

its more in the way it’s worded.
He will highlight that “Serial number is REQUIRED “ even on posts where it would do absolutely no damn good.
It’s the attitude he uses with it,
No one would have a problem with
“I’m pretty sure xyz is what you should check next, but there might have been some year differences with that motor, to be for sure please give me the serial so I can double check”
Not “ you are not allowed to post here without the serial”
and also on issues where it would help I don’t think anyone has issue
but “95’ Promax with coned lu, props coming loose” how is serial gonna help?
he even states small shaft when asked.
If anything the serial number in this specific case could actually give you the WRONG info.
But alas, all small shaft lu combos that could accept a cone and physically bolt to that motor take the same hub and washer kits, depending on prop.
So actually knowing what prop he has is more important than the serial.

Some people can't resist letting some small amount of power that they imagine they possess go to their head.

haha i know this has already been said it drives me nuts also when looking for some plug wires or some random thing and they ask for serial number at the dealer. Ive taken a pic and leave it on my phone as ive been down there and say what? i have no idea what my number is but its a 97 promax. they say is that a Yamaha? haha i think because the dealers only really deal with newer reg motors and have a million books to look up parts this helps them narrow down all the parts for the specific motor. I know when I give them the number the whole parts list for everything comes up on the computer and I can go threw it with them to find the right number.
OR I just ask on hear and some guy knows off the top of his head and posts it for me asap thats always my first go to!! S&F rocks for that with knowledgeable people !!

Similar issues when you call a place like auto zone or sumthin and say you need windshield wipers and they gotta know motor size ,4x4 or 2wd, crew or reg cab lol. They just don't know unless it types up on computer sometimes
