You know what I love about this board?
Not much of a poster but more of a reader here, but I love how nobody chastises you or refuses to answer your question because you didn't post the serial number of your motor. That's all.

Half of my junk has a ser # from a diff motor. And I have no idea what it started out as. I just go with the # on the trans mount for ins. IF I have one that has a number on it....The old metal plates were fairly good. Newer ones with the sticker just don't last as long.

Too funny. Dealt with it today on a Kubota motor so it's not just boat dealers.

Rock, he is being sarcastic, He is talking about a self appointed merc guru, that has somehow taken over the tech section, on what used to be, the best bass boat forum for info, i dont even see jsre, chris carson, or any of the good mercury guys post there much anymore. This guy will chastise posters for asking questions w/out posting their full s/#'s, his agenda i think is to sell parts, and brainwash new young mercury owners.

It has always been a joke tween a tech buddy of mine and I. When I would come for parts all their parts guy could do was look up numbers so when I came in one of a couple techs would help me. Always bugged me when a guy selling something has absolutely zero knowledge of the product. That day I was looking for a fuel pump for a tractor and the first thing this guy says is "what's the serial number" so I assumed. Like Mr. Obvious says, "I never made the connection."

Yep. I don't understand the serial number thing, demands it for anything, whether a serial number would even help or not. Spends more time posting in peoples threads to post the "REQUIRED INFORMATION" or that they're in the wrong mercury section and not giving them an answer or telling them the answer they need and still wanting to see a serial number. It's weird. He's run a lot of good people off over there. Haven't been on here much in a while, but it's nice to see people just giving answers.

He does go a little over the top with the serial number thing, but you have to give the guy some credit for the amount of time he takes to answer almost everyone's questions. I don't know if he is the best Merc tech to ever walk the earth, but I have never seen him give advice that is obliviously bad.

A lot of
techs are very specific in the steps they take in evaluating a motor. He was trained to start with the ser. #. Prob a good tech. He wants to KNOW exactly what he is working on so he won't give incorrect advice. It can be tedious, but some guys just operate that way. I have known a few myself. I'm not that good of a tech so I feel fine shooting from the hip.....
