Rip , mercury killed off all 2 stroke engines 4-1-18

As a guy who started with OMC lawnboy 2 stroke in 1973 and alaways had 2 stroke engines from dirt bikes to outboards , its a sad day .
Its official MERCURY NO LONGER MANUFACTURES 2 STROKE OUTBOARDS.................

We will never look back "as long as we are able to afford the new stuff". This progression has happened with motorcycles "200 hp in stock form and running sub 9 sec. 1/4 ets", snowmobiles (making 500+ hp), dirt bikes (making 70 hp with endless torque), watercraft (making 350+ hp and running over 120 mph), cars "new zr1 over 750hp off the showroom floor", boats that you buy with stock power from the manuf. having over 1700 hp a side "we couldn't dream of this stuff 20 years ago". Now its turn for the outboards--you will soon be able to buy something that will be more then you ever dreamed of. Just like all of the aforementioned categories using four stroke variable valve timing technology we will have more power then we know what to do with. WE SHOULD BE CELEBRATING, NOT COMPLAINING....

The 150 Pro XS four stroke is 456 lbs and the 150 Optimax was 431 lbs. That seems like a pretty big jump in power/weight. Still not quite 2 stroke territory...

The high cost to design and re-tool, build with exotic parts and bring to dealers is what will kill the little guy. The big dollar guys can and will pay whatever they charge. A new motor costing upwards of 20k is not something that is in my budget....ever....I am damn sure glad I have a bunch of old stuff. 2.4's, 2.5's, opti's, EFI 3.0's. Almost sold it all. not as sure I will now.

You forgot all the downsides. 4 joke makes everything bigger, heavier, clumsy, harder to work on, more expensive to buy, more expensive to maintain.
I used to be big into jet ski's. I sold of everything when they went 4 joke. They weren't fun anymore. They were about as nimble as a 9.9 zodiak. And cost twice as much to buy and maintain and didn't last any longer. The EPA and the tree huggers are gonna kill anything fun or cost effective they can.
Same with boats. How long has it been since mercury produced a sub 400lb 200+ hp engine? How much longer will we have to wait to buy a new off the shelf motor that meets those standards? That not what I call progress. That's over complicating something that worked moonlighting as progress. In other words they made square wheels out of round ones and will stop at nothing to convince us square wheels are the wave of the future.

Let's be straight up here. Consumer preference killed the 2 stroke. The weekend warriors don't want to do anything but turn the key. Their wives don't like the smoke or noise. Who got the 4s thing rolling? Begins with a y and ends in a. Blame them....Merc was happily purring along making smoke till they came along with this 4s crap.

Well that certainly makes me feel better. LOL The fact remains that the 2 stroke becomes a relic, not unlike myself. A sad day.
Speed cost money. How fast you wanna go?
I have done so much with so little for so long, I can now do the impossible with nothing!

A couple of your comments are going to hold true. 1. More expensive to buy-for sure. 2. more expensive to maintain-not so sure about that but they will for sure be more expensive to repair. As far as weight, and horsepower, 200 isn't even going to be in our vocabulary in the near future...I am looking forward to seeing 1 hp per pound in the 500 to 600 range. As for jet ski's (stand ups) I raced them for years and was into them at their peak. You will never replace a pumped up 701 twin with a total loss ign. set up unless they made a single like the 450 open bikes. Unfortunately the demand is long gone for that.

There is an upside and downside to everything. I tend to focus on the upside because NOTHING good will ever come from focusing on the downside. Outboards are going to get real fast and one thing that does concern me is the fact that these boats will be capable of speeds that were only attainable from boats that weigh twice as much today-people that don't know better are going to die.

I've heard that the yamhas already have the mounts and locations cast into the midsection for a cat.
