Spent a couple hours after work stripping the boat down...

And off to fiberglass and paint...

Going with a grey paint and matte black accent (emblems, windshield frame, cleats, ect)
This is the color I'm shooting for.

Hope it looks as good in real life as in my head....

Guess it's time for some updates.... Got a motor mostly together, working on some fiberglass issues.

After being pushed to the back burner got this drug out and started up again. Shooting for a memorial day launch date. Spent the day sanding, fixing fiberglass, fixing the "fixes" the previous fiberglass guy did.

03-06-2018, 08:42 PM #52I started boating on the Niagara river , just above Niagara falls , first a Viper 77 then a Viking 78 they were a joke on the weekends when all the big boats were out , then I got a 1979 Venus finally a boat that could handle the mess on weekends, the 20 foot V bottoms were highly underrated , great project.

Don't forget to flip it over to blueprint the last 5 /6 foot of the pad.

03-07-2018, 07:58 AM #54Really takes no time at all , take a four foot strait edge to the end of the pad and check out what you got, I've used a three to four foot piece of 4 inch channel spray glue on a some roll sand paper , depending on what you find is what you have to do, now is the time before you fix the deck , wind shield ect. just have some friends stop by and roll it over , get used carpet . To do all that work with out doing the pad is a SIN. You go to Hell for sure! You go to Hell for sure!

I remember a factory installed lip on the rear of one if not both of my new streams , but that was almost 40 years ago , so the memory is fade....ingLast edited by CUDA; 03-07-2018 at 12:05 PM.

I'll have to look into it. Any good write ups?

03-07-2018, 02:24 PM #57Still looking...Looks like a once and done...I'm needing a color and a clear with glitter. Have used 2 part urethane's in the past for a base / clear with or without glitter finish. Works well enough, just has gotten a bit pricey.

 Always willing to investigate something new to me....which is a lot... Last edited by W2F a V-King; 03-07-2018 at 03:56 PM. James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

03-08-2018, 05:24 AM #59Not just the pad, but also either side of the pad out to the hard chine as well. You would have to be in the mid 80's pushing 90 ( will vary boat to boat and setup ) I'm guessing to be just riding the pad. Areas either side of the pad will be very important too. Slower speeds wet more hull area, and any irregularity (hook, rocker, etc) will effect boat handling, proposing, etc.
I like the idea mentioned above using an I beam and rough sandpaper glued to it.
That will show the high and low areas... Prep and Fill the low areas to avoid cutting into the actual hull skin. On a20' boat like that I'd go at least 6 ft. Or More. Once you get the boat flipped, and start eyeing it up, you will see how far you need to go.....

If you take the time now to do this you won't be sorry, but if you don't you might be... Especially if later on you get the need for more speed and hang more ponies, you will know the likely most important part of the boat for higher speeds will be already done!

03-09-2018, 11:18 AM #60Right on! Cant wait to see it come along.

Fun fact Friday. A Vulture is not a stretched VKing but rather a Vector with some changes that eventual found their way to the VKing hull the following year. About 2-3 years ago I had a lengthy discussion with Howard about this and he said that what is on the registry web site is wrong and that they took a Vector and made it 20 feet to get around USCG horsepower limits/ratings and changed up the hull a bit and these changes eventually are what the vking hull was based off as far as core and structural design. Also, if you look at the rear wing area of a Vector and a Vulture, they are the same as where the VKing is more straight as the wing areas come out. Also, the first year for the Vulture was 1977 and the first year for the Vking was 1978. Cant modify something that hadnt been built yet. That is all, back to the build.
