I found a merc 260!down here in Colombia.

What should I look for on it. I plan to tear it apart and swap in top pinned pistons. whats it usually cost to go thru one that’s running?
what are the better years of this engine etc, thanks in advance for any info. Rm

Brother, I’m in Colombia South America near Cartagena. The first mercury dealer opened his doors last year lol. I will be doing this one myself. I’ve done a lot of racing two stroke bikes and build all my offshore and street rod motors. My first outboard but I ain’t scared

I’ve dealt with pro marine b4. Any idea what six slugs and rings will set me back. Any downside to going with those pistons over mercury. They weigh the same? Thx for the info

Most racers use the Pro marine / lighter / find them on ebay nothing is cheap . not sure Merc even sells them anymore.

If the engine is still running ok, you probably wont need any pistons. New pistons have different weights. Thats why you use a digtal gram scale to make sure they are usable. Don't know where you'd find a gram scale in columbia though, lol. Many things to know to build these motors properly. Big-block chevy's they ain't. You familiar with the 260's charging system?
