I don't really remember how the final fix was done by OMC but they did a very good job fixing this major issue fast. Never a problem again.

Not sure about this powerabout,
I think the unpainted 6 inch mid section in this picture is the newer stronger one. There was not even time to paint them. The original one was painted to mach the rest of the engine.
Maybe OMC made a few different replacement 6 inch mid sections but the problem was fixed and OMC paid for the fix. Free of charge.
PS you can also see the CFI box is on top of the powerhead..later it was an the back of the exhaust manifold.

Interesting reading about boat racing safety from 1985.
OMC and Second Effert was first in the USA to make tunnel boat circuit racing safer. Lots of time and money was spent.
This is also something that maybe Rich Luhrs like to read.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

It was OMC, Chris Hodges and Cees Van Der Velden who took the first step late 1984 to make tunnel boat racing safer for everybody.

This Evinrude F1-V8 had a hard day at the office.
Here you can see the 12 inch midsection and the more rounded/smoother engine cowling..it's the 1984 model.
Also the last year for the carb model.

Another F1-V8 racer was Bill Marshall from the UK.
A very nice fellow and we raced together in the Aspen Formula 3 1982. He entered the V8 series later and did pass the test. He also finished third in a F1-V8 race.
Here is more about Bill and his blue # 40 with Evinrude V8 power.
