Crap - left out seal strips between block halves-
2.5 - 1998 PH assembly - got parts in and got all exicted - put it back together - sealed (anerobic sealer with primer) and torqued halves together - set it on mid and started put nuts on studs - reached for a wrench and dang it- there lay the cork sealing strips that go bewteen halves-
I guess I need to tear back apart and put them in - right??Last edited by CircleHook; 09-11-2017 at 06:53 PM.

Some Mercurys don't use the cork gaskets and use nothing BUT the red gel seal for case half seal ( 518 loctite ) 225X Pro Max comes to mind !

thanks Jay- I figure there is always some minor risk every time something is taken apart and put back together- (kind of like surgery)
I did use red gel with primer - question - tear it apart or not?

Man that sucks, all that work and then realise at the last minute.

If you don't it will always be in the back of your mind. It don't take that long. Found a circlip a couple months back. Took motor apart and it was an extra but I couldn't let it go. Your miss isn't near as potentially fatal as mine but I have enough trouble sleeping at night.

As Jay Smith said some of the later blocks do not use the seal strips, only the sealer between the two halves. I've never had one that didn't seal with the Loctite 518.

I'm with Rock , not using them on a motor that Didn't come with them is one thing.
Back in the day I installed 2 powerheads without putting the shift shaft in , learned my lesson.Cheaters never Win !!!

I worked for an Evinrude dealer years ago, used to throw a couple needle bearing under co-workers' finished powerheads on the bench.... Would tell him as he started removing the intake..............

Couple of hours fixed that -
However now I am nagged by a sound I heard putting front half down on back- with about 3/8" left to mate surfaces I heard click or snap sound that I took to be a sealing ring snapping into groove- now I am worried I might have broken it- it closed up just fine with no other oddities-
I figure if I broke the ring it would have stopped the halves from mating?? what ya think? At this point I have it all together except carbs and electric - and installed on mid so another tear down would be a pain-
