Did the OMC rotaries sound anything like the Mazda racing rotaries? I don't recall the OMC motors ever being run down here in South Florida so I never saw or heard them run.

I raced with the Rotary's in Paris 6 hours 1974 and still remember the sound when the two Rotary powered boats laps my OE class boat.
No, they did not sound like the Mazda rotary...much better.
Very happy with our Paris 6 Hour race 1974

Bob Spalding #11 Velden/Carlsberg/Johnson V6 RS 3 liter looper with fuel injection.
This is from Idroscalo, Italy and my guess is 1979 or -80. Probably -80.

Hmm..I don't understand powerabout..the Evinrude 3 liter looper was called CCC..??..I guess you mean the V8 but that was 1981 in Brodenbach, Germany. One year later.

The OMC 3 liter V6 looper with fuel injection was introduced very late 1977 for the 1978 race season. The Johnson model was called RS and the Evinrude CCC.
OMC did not sell this engine, only a few drivers mainly in Europe raced the engine in the OZ class up to it was replaced by the V8 OZ class engine mid summer 1981 in Brodenbach, Germany.
The OZ class V8 was sold to any approved race driver.
Renato Molinari won the first ever F1-V8 race in Germany 1981

I have a few very good memories around the OMC V6 3 liter looper race engine. (CCC & RS)
One is when I was with Jack Leek in Stuart, Florida in the spring of 1979. Jimbo was testing a carburetor model and he was testing different jets.
The reason was Merc took OMC to court when Ron Anderson left Merc for OMC.
OMC could not use the fuel injection for a specific time. Don't remember exactly how long but it was very interesting sitting in a rescue boat with Jack Leek all day.
It was a perfect time to get to know Jack. He was very friendly and I am pretty sure he was sick and tired after a day with me asking tons of questions.Last edited by lars strom; 08-17-2017 at 08:47 PM.
