I think it was April 17, 1966. I came home on emergency leave from Nam because the Red Cross thought my mother was dying. I was taken out of the field on an operation. I only had the clothes on my back which were pretty dirty, and no under clothes. My shirt was modified with short sleeves. Not USMC issue. I landed in Miami on Easter Sunday 10 April 1966 and my dad picked me up. My mother was in a hospital in Lakeland, they were living in Lake Placid. We went to see her every day. On Sunday the 17th while driving around Lakeland I heard the unmistaken sound of alky outboards. We found the lake and there were lots of boats there. The most exciting part of the day was F-Hydro. There were about five running, maybe six. Dick O'Dea led most of the race but it was close. The weather was a little windy. At the finish the first three boats were about 20 or so yards apart. About 20 feet before the finish Dick and the second boat both blew over, but both crossed the finish. Dick set a new Five Mile record and the second and third boats both broke the existing record. Exciting to say the least. Mom made it and lasted another 10 years. I went back to Nam in July.

How do you even have this picture? I doubt anyone else remembers this race. I do remember because I hurt my back in this race and I just had a procedure to control pain again. We pay for the excess of our youth in our old age.

Most of the pictures I have of my race boats were taken by that lady.

I forgot to mention I flew out of Okinawa on April 10th, Easter morning at 3AM. I landed at San Francisco at 3AM easter morning. Freaky..I wanted to get my one year old daughter an easter bunny, but they had none. So I got her an Easter Rat. Great family laugh forever.
