WTF Mercury!?! Basic tuneup parts and gaskets NLA!?!?
1987 2.0L:
-No carb kits
-The gaskets that seal the air box to the carbs: NLA
-No fuel pump kits
-Fuel pump gaskets and diaphragms: NLA
2000 90 FourStroke:
-water pump gaskets: NLA
What are we supposed to do, re-use old gaskets? Buy a new motor even though this one is perfectly good? Thank goodness it's a Yamaha power head, because all the carb parts are still available from Yamaha, (and they're cheaper than Mercury parts, too!)
Anyway. What. The. F**k. Mercury? Basic tuneup parts are never NLA for Evinrudes. Even for the 1959 35 Big Twin I used to have. And EVERYTHING is available for the V4 cross flow... At least every gasket and tuneup part imaginable.
How do you put the air box back on a 2.0L? Re-use the old gasket and hope it doesn't tear? Cut your own out of a roll of gasket material? WTF!?!?
Sorry for the rant. I've been in touch with Chris Carson and he's going to help me out (love those guys). But Mercury is nuts about this.

It's not Mercury doing this, Brunswick is making all the stupid WTF calls. Brought some parts last week, gone was the Quicksilver name...What about all the 2.5HP owners, A-36 Stater NLA. Don't make sense...

Sure it makes sense... Polaris, Miller Electric (welders), etc all have the same kind of MBA pricks running the show instead of the engineers, inventors, and mechanics who built the companys' reputations.
Now rather than building loyalty by making a better product they offer a short warranty to get people to buy new and make replacement parts so expensive and hard to find that people say "if it's going to cost that much to fix this old motor I might as well buy a new one with a warranty."

Thanks, Tom. I'm fine I guess, using gaskets and diaphragms from places like Sierra.
As for scumbag MBA types running (and ruining) all the good old names? Seems like it... For the most... An exception being Evinrude/Bombardier. Pretty much all the common wear and tuneup items are still available, even going way back. I didn't even start in boating until 2008 where my first motor was a 1959 'Rude. I was pleasantly surprised to find everything I needed for even a motor that old. I guess I was expecting the same thing when I got my first Merc in 2012, which was 30 years newer.
Didn't mean to come off as anti-Merc. I love my 2.0L 150. I even love my 2000 Merc 90hp FourStroke (with Yamaha power head).

Know you know why I love my OMC's. And you can still get parts for as far back as about 1956. I collect old OMC's, got a bunch of 57 and 58's, 3hp to 35 hp. All in running order. But my dad's 20 hp Merc that he bought new in 77? I had to find a used coil for it cause it was NLA. That was 15 years ago!

go to the many marine parts websites (marineengine.com, boatparts.net, PRO marine, etc) and find the part numbers that you need. marineengine.com has the OEM Merc part numbers, superceded numbers, AND the aftermarket part numbers. Then search for specific part numbers. You can find ANYTHING on the internet!!!!

As to OMC/BRP, go price the little black primer solenoid (with the red twisty knob) used in place of a "choke"... obsolete. When it was available, it was excess of $100. OMC and BRP used to obsolete many parts all the time and still do. But there are some preferred dealers who buy all of those items from the factory. Seaway Marine in Seattle is one big dealer who buys NLA stuff in quanity. As to the Merc/Yamaha parts on early 4-strokes, you can thank Yamaha (not Merc). Yamaha refuses to sell to Merc at anything under retail. Remember, they USED to have a contract, not any more!! What's the point if they mark-up parts by even 10%, Merc would be the bad guy. And Yamaha wouldn't provide any warranty to you or them anyways!! The consumer is the one who suffers, but don't blame Merc when Yamaha is the one to blame. And, as to early 2.0 litre parts?? ? That's like..... 35/40 year old stuff. IF they continued to make it in such small quantity, then you couldn't afford it. Better stock up as it's gunna get leaner. 15 or 20 years from now, it'll be harder to get parts for 60 year old engines... I'm just saying!!

Its gone up a few bucks...still available though. Marine Engine lists it at $226.00

@King Dad ... I'm talking about tuneup parts, mate. Gaskets, diaphragms, things like that. I already buy power head parts directly from Yamaha, for my Mercaha. As to my 30 year old 2.0L Merc... So what? You can still get every gasket and seal for a 60 year old Evinrude. Why can't you get a carburetor gasket for one of the most popular outboards ever, with hundreds if not thousands still in use, just because it's a Mercury? Remember, I'm talking tuneup and basic maintenance parts here, not short blocks and cowls and gear cases.

I hear ya brother...
However, I'm running a 2.4 litre 200, 1989. Two floats peer carb, guess what?? NLA... So, I've sourced these kinds of items, from someone other than Merc. Head gaskets are a pain to find, but ....
If the market would bear volume, perhaps Merc would continue to make them, OR , they could just charge us more $$$. We could just step up and buy the up-date kit... a new 200 4stroke. I just can't justify the 11 grand plus AND, I value the "classic", completely "old school", closed bow Centurion I run. Kinda Rat Rod.. I love the patina it has!! I do sometime wish the women weren't so old school tho....oh, well.

I too feel your pain.. I my opinion, the marine parts market has been modified much like the car parts market. How many youngsters are out in their garages working on their own cars these days. I see a lot of homes these days that have had their garages downsized to one maybe two cars. Most of them are closed with no apparent mechanics' activity. That said, marinas are closing faster than Sears stores. How many good certified and /or back yard marine mechanics are left? The parts market is sensitive to retail sale of parts. If OMC or Mercury's parts inventory are not moving they obsolete them. In their defense, its good business. The EPA is partly responsible in the grand scheme of things. Less emissions from outboards, introduce the 4 cycle outboard (which to me makes little sense other than less emissions). This had an impact on parts sales as well. Not all parts, but tune up and overhaul. My son blew his 2.5 and a subsequent bill for $4000.00 repairs. I would have helped him out, but I'm an old 2.4 Bridgeport guy, much has changed.. I'm getting off topic, so I believe we will see more and more parts coming up obsolete and/or NLA.
