    Crusader inboard....

Yeah, I know.....too heavy, too slow, but here we go..... working on one of those engines that make you lose hair. late eighties Crusader 454/350 big block right hand rotation. somebody before me changed the long block out using a Mercruiser reman, so the block and circ pump are new. Customer just bought the boat, work was done before he got it. The complaint is the engine over heats. I ran the engine at the dock at idle to 1000 rpm, the exhaust manifolds get up to over 200 degrees withing 3 minutes, the circ pump and block at that point are at 120 degrees, thermostat housing at 100 degrees. Let it run long enough, the block and circ pump goes over 200 and the exhaust manifolds go over 250... I found they put a non-vented thermostat in, so I changed it out with the correct 160 degree thermostat with the vent hole. ran it again with the same results except the thermostat hosing temps go up with the exhaust manifolds. Now, Mercury ships their remans with intake gaskets the have the water jackets blocked off on the back end, I'm wondering if someone installed those gaskets backwards? any thoughts? Salt water side all clean and new impeller.

Attached is a parts blowup so you get an idea of the fresh water circulation....Click image for larger version.

Take the tstat out & run a piece of mechanic's wire or solder down the coolant passage to the intake gasket. Either it goes deeper or hits a wall. Check both ways

Yeah, was thinking of doing that, actually, with the housing off, I should be able to see it....... didn't feel like taking it apart at 200 degrees, maybe tomorrow..... Thanks
