Me too; I walked into the office and it was "preparing to upgrade" even though I've decline every opportunity to upgrade. I don't really understand why they're pushing W10 so hard; unless they eventually plan to charge for every "app" you use... or display advertising everywhere on your computer even when you aren't doing anything online?

99 dollars later the GURU got that reversed. good news, bad news is he thinks they will continue to press the issue. told me to use this series of actions regularly,,, here we go,
go to Accessories
select, System Tools
next select, Disc Cleanup
then, Clean System Files
you at that point have a series of topics with a box on the left that you check to eliminate.
hope this helps, whenever a popup comes up and asks "do you want to allow" NO! fun out

Glad ya got your problem fixed. Computer problems are frustrating!
I was about to get a new laptop but installed a SolidState HD instead and think I might get another year or two out of this old machine.
I upgraded to 10 awhile back and while it's OK there are things I don't like about it. But being I don't use this comp for anything other than internet and games it's not a big deal.-----------------------

In Windows 7, turn off automatic updates, search your installed updates for KB3035583 and uninstall it (this is the app that installs Windows 10). Set your updates to "notify but do not install". Review your updates when notified and install only security updates, uncheck the rest.

The reason they are pushing 10 is they say it's the last OS they are building and will just update it and bring out apps for it...so they say.

Yep Pete! I do the same and chose what I THINK NEEDED! On 7 lap in the shop, and have a new Win 10 pad that I can't stand! I can't imagine what Win 8, and the upgrade 8.1 people had to go through what was simple XP. And STILL run XP the house old EMachine desk top decade plus? Never hacked years, never a prob. Easy simple, and it worked so MS said "it works, so lets fix it"? But I'm only a "surfer", no Biz puter as that is a diff story.
Today caught "Kim Komando, Digital Goddess"..(were all gonna die the net!) about 5 YEARS MS "patches" coming? STOP updates, and go check back one month and see just what REALLY "concerns" ya. Remember when puters took over and be a "paperless society"? BS........as twice, heck 7 times paper copies made now! Called "progress"..?

I kept warning people about Windows 10 and why Microsoft was becoming very unscrupulous (in my opinion) in their methods of doing anything they can to get users to upgrade. Microsoft is giving Windows 10 away for free for a very good reason: Windows 10 is the on-ramp to Microsoft's forthcoming Windows subscription service. You guessed it - like Adobe's products now, Windows will eventually become a subscription service. You will need to pay a fee to keep your Windows license active. So, you will no longer own your Windows license - you will be renting it. Sort of like your cell phone service, in a way - if you stop paying Microsoft the Windows licensing fee, your computer will revert to a very-limited functionality state.
What Pete said about setting your Windows update preferences is very important. I always keep my preferences to notify me, and never to install on its own. My philosophy is generally that in every case possible, I would not want my computer doing anything without my consent. And guess what? Windows 10 has no such option - or, at least it didn't when it was in beta. As far as I know, Windows 10 installs updates whether you like it or not.
I think Microsoft has been very sleazy with this Windows 10 upgrade pressuring tactic. Originally, that nagging Windows 10 update was installed as a "critical update", which is a total lie. Microsoft has since changed it to an optional update, so if you reinstall Windows, you will not have it installed unless you specifically choose to. I've never had any issues with Microsoft in my history of using Windows computers, until now.
This also reminds me of another recent sleazeball move by Microsoft - a few years ago they quietly changed the licensing agreement for their Office suite, such that the software was tied to the computer you installed it on (like Windows 10 is, now). So, if you purchased MS Office, and your motherboard fails a month later, guess what you need to do when you get a new computer? You get to buy Office all over again. There was such an outcry over this that MS had to change their license accordingly. As far as I am aware, the current Windows 10 license is tied to the computer it's installed on.
Right now, I'm perfectly happy watching Google go after Microsoft's business in every way they can, and watching MS try to react to those threats, such as Google Docs, which is absolutely fantastic (and, free).
I'm going to keep on using Windows 7 Professional until Microsoft ends support for it. And Microsoft is doing everything they can to push people into Windows 10, which just annoys me more and more. Unless Apple goes the same route as Microsoft, I am strongly considering a switch to Macs.
If I can help with anything please let me know
Greg
